Vantage Pro -32701 error

Cumulus has started to freeze with the following pop up error:

"Error -32701 while trying to initialise the station. Please check your connections and settings"

If I close Cumulus and move the USB cable from one port to another and then restart Cumulus it starts working again for another few hours. Also if I simply reboot the PC it all works again on restart.

I thought it might be hardware so I obtained another PC but got the same on that so its either the USB-Serial IF or its Cumulus (those being the only things consistent)

Thanks

Chris

Check in Windows' Device Manager;
Universal Serial Bus controllers,
USB Root Hub (all of them)
and ensure that;
Power management,
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power;
is NOT ticked.

A DLL from Davis handles all communication with the station. The -32701 error is the DLL saying that it can't communicate with the station, and that's the only information about the problem that it gives. The only thing that I can suggest that you might not have looked at is to make sure that the USB ports are not set to suspend in your Windows power settings (Edit: as posted above).

Thanks both.
I checked and the power management was set on all the instances for the USB Root Hub
I've switched it off and and I'll report back later to see if it has fixed the problem.

There's another power setting that I've seen recommended. I don't know how you get to it in XP, but in Windows 7 and 8, you go Control Panel - Power options - Change plan settings - Change advanced power settings - USB settings - USB selective suspend settings - change to 'disabled'.

Chris:

How long is your USB cable? Maximum length is 16 feet. (approx 5 meters). I've seen many devices, especially printers, that lose connectivity intermittently when using a cable that long.

Another thing you can try is a small freeware utility called USBDeView from Nirsoft. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

It allows you to view and delete historical USB connections that have been made to the computer. After deletion the computer is forced to re-detect the device. This has been helpful to me in the past.
