Silverlight, a couple of minor things.

Post by gluepack »

Wasn't sure where to post this, sorry.

I like the realtime Silverlight display and have it displayed (in a separate window) from the weather page on my main site.

I wanted to incorporate it into the weather pages.... http://jerbils.info/saratoga/wxcurealtime.php or select "Cumulus direct" from the "Real Time Display" menu item at http://jerbils.info/saratoga/wxindex.php .....
and I think it looks fine except for...

. main problem is that it overlays my 2nd level flyout menu items. I thought it was perhaps a z-index problem (or that I could resolve it by setting z-index) but I have tried playing around in the Developer Tools (F12) in Chrome and can't seem to resolve it. It is probably pretty simple. Any ideas? (btw I don't use the css head code).

. minor problem. I abhor scroll bars or, rather, not being able to adjust things to fit where I want it to. Again, I have tried playing around with sizing but it looks like it is a fixed size ? so that it will fit into the size you specify but not reduced/increased to fit. Is that the case?

On reflection, both seem pretty naive questions but age is getting the better of me.

I think the overlay problem is because silverlight is writing direct into the video card buffer (like video playback apps do) so setting z-index will not have any effect.

As far as I know the applet is a fixed size.

I don't know a lot about how Silverlight does its graphics, but I do know it uses hardware acceleration, so I suspect this is what Mark is describing. And yes, it's a fixed size. Unfortunately I can no longer do any development on it as my subscription to the component set that it uses has lapsed so I would have to take out a new subscription, and this would cost 1000 UKP for the first year.

You could try adding

Code: Select all

<param name="windowless" value="true" />
to the parameters for the application to see if it fixes the menu problem. I don't whether it will have other unwanted effects, though.

Thanks.

I couldn't get back on to the forum as there was a SQL error but...

tgf Google. Sorry, I should have tried there first and I pretty quickly found that adding <param name="windowless" value="true" /> resolved the overlay problem.

As far as sizing is concerned, I found two or three complex solutions but I also found a reference to....
Silverlight: Absolutely. Just set the the Stretch property to Uniform and then alter either the Width or Height as you resize.
...but it was rather cryptic and I haven't figured out what they mean yet.

I think it's referring to changes required in the application itself, unfortunately.

Oh well, I think it is gradually giving up the ghost.

Chrome appears to be the only browser now that shows it correctly.

Firefox/Waterfox doesn't show it at all (at least on my systems).

Safari shows a grey square where it should be but no image.

IE, for some reason, displays a very cropped version now, reducing it to about 1/4 height, with added scrollbar.

btw, the overlaying of menu items, that was corrected by your suggested code mod, occurs with WU's rapid fire as well, in all browsers except Chrome. Is there a fix for that as well, do you know?

Oh the joys of php/css/html/etc.,etc.

The equivalent for Flash seems to be

Code: Select all

<param name="wmode" value="transparent">

Not sure if it needs the terminator or not but, even with that, it doesn't seem to help. Thanks anyway.

Oh and Silverlight now appears to be working on Waterfox/Firefox and, also, IE displays it fully since I changed height to an explicit amount as opposed to 100% (what did it think it was doing 100% of ?).
