Templates and Android

Post by gluepack »

Not sure if it is the technique you are using for flyout menus or not but when running on a Nexus 7 (Android OS), for example, anything below the first menu level doesn't work (i.e. the only ones that work are the ones without a flyout). I tried it with some other websites that use the templates and same problem. I don't know if it is relevant but a # is appended to the (my) URL when you invoke the flyout.

The flyout-menu uses pure CSS to do the flyout functions (CSS 2.1) so this sounds like an issue with the browser on your Nexus 7.

Try viewing the original demo of the CSS menu system at http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menus/flyout_4level.html and see if it behaves the same .. if it does, then your browser is the issue. The menu system works fine on IE, FF, Opera, Chrome, and Safari.

Best regards,
Ken

Is it a functioning menu at the url you specified? None of the 1st level items work let alone the fly out.

I am not sure if you understood my post. The flyouts work fine but they don't take you anywhere when you click on them, only the first level items do.

The browser used both under windows (which works) and android (that doesn't) is the chrome browser.

The sample URL was just a test.. the links in it are not functional, but it is a demonstration of the 4-level flyout-menu.

Regrettably, I don't own an Android device with Chrome browser, so I can't test it here.

I do think that since all the other browsers on Windows, and OSX/Firefox,Safari and iPad/iPhone/Safari do work as expected, it is likely an issue with the Chrome instance on Android that needs a fix -- the <a href="..">...</a> links are being produced in the flyout-menu and are just not being followed by your Android/Chrome browser.

The '#' is a placeholder on the URL so menu entries without a link specified automatically refer to the existing page you're browsing (a <a href="#">...</a> is automatically created so the HTML validates).

Best regards,
Ken

We have a Galaxy SIII and also a Galaxy Tab2 on the premises and both display web pages correctly and the flyout menu works on the main level and the next level down on our website.

Maybe it is something to do with the browser on your phone?

I don't know where your Saratoga website is so I could not check it.

;) The Nexus 7 isn't a phone, it is a 32gb tablet by Google/Asus running Android 4.2, Jelly Bean.

The "website" isn't fully operational as I'd prefer to integrate it into my existing one. Sorry, I did specify it on other threads. You can access the test version at http://www.jerbils.info/saratoga/wxindex.php. Anyway, it happens with other websites that use the same templates.

I did think that it may just be taking an inordinate amount of time to load as the items on the 2nd level flyout may typically require more processing. It is wireless connect to a local network which in turn is connected to a 5mbps internet service. However, that isn't the case.

If I pinch to zoom in, to make the menu items easier to select, and select "Forecast & Advisories", the flyout occurs but the display jumps to the top of the page. If I then scroll down and select "Forecast Details" the # is appended to the URL, the flyout disappears and nothing happens.

I have no problem running on a laptop or desktop system using Win 7 and 8.

Tried it on my 4.0.4 HP tablet...
Chrome - fails, same as you appends # and nothing happens.
Built-in browser - works OK
Dolphin - works OK
Firefox - works OK

On all the browsers the flyout works fine zoomed out.

Thanks for that.

I tried BCJKiwi's site and that gave some really peculiar symptoms. The first 2nd level flyout item I tried gave a popup. From then on everyone I tried also gave a popup (which may have been the same one). Then I went to "links" from the 1st level and that was fine but trying 2nd level from there it was behaving the same as mine, just not doing anything and appending the #.

Actually, it is not my tablet, it is my partner's and I am not sure whether she would appreciate another browser being installed but I will see.

Well, I convinced her to let me install an alternative browser.

Chrome for Android doesn't support Flash. So, installing an alternative browser gave me the opportunity to get one that does support it.

With FirefoxBeta the flyouts work fine. I'll report the issue to Google.

And, with the apk installed, Flash works great on FirefoxBeta too.
