Today.ini reset after reinstalling weatherlink

Post by DaveNZ »

Hi Steve

I have recently had a new install of Windows 7 64-bit on my computer, and only got around to installing Weatherlink yesterday. First I closed Cumulus/WD and disconnected the console as the software initially requested. Then during the installation process Weatherlink cleared all the data off the Davis data logger. Once I restarted Cumulus, around 9.50pm local, today.ini was reset and the true 'today' data was written to yesterday.ini.

Unfortunately I only noticed what happened around 11.10pm local. I closed Cumulus and manually fixed today.ini and yesterday.ini (the latter was easy, just copy the file across from the backups folder).

I realise none of this would have happened if I had started Cumulus before opening WL and performing the set up steps. Whoops.

But I am just wondering why Cumulus reset the daily figures as if a new day had started? It seems as though Cumulus saw a strange situation but didn't quite handle it very well in this case. I can attach the specific diags file if you like. I have read it myself ;)

I don't really follow what it was you did - you're presumably using Virtual VP, so I don't understand why you had to close anything to install Weatherlink, it would just connect to VVP thinking it was talking to a real station. Cumulus and WD could have just carried on running. But in any case, you only had Cumulus stopped for a short time, so it should just have carried on again when you started it up, as usual.

If you zip up the diags folder and attach it, I'll take a look.

When I put the WeatherLink CD in the computer it said that in order to install I had to disconnect the console from the computer (hence why I closed Cumulus).
Here is the zip - I only put one file in there as this is the one of interest. Line 141 is where it does day reset
Thank you for your time

But the instructions refer to a 'real' console. Your console is actually VVP, as far as your software is concerned, and the Davis instructions don't cater for VVP. It presumably wants you to disconnect the console before it installs the USB drivers; you already have those installed.

The last two logger entries were 'old' entries:

6/04/2013 21:53:37.328 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 6/04/2013 9:47:00 p.m. raindaystart = 58.5999984741211 rain counter = 59
6/04/2013 21:53:37.335 : VP2: processing logger data entry 6 for 5/04/2013 3:08:00 a.m.
6/04/2013 21:53:37.335 : ih=68.0 oh=83.0 it=21.6 ot=15.1 wc=10.1 dp=10.8 pr=1015.006 wg=8.0 ws=4.8 wd=9 rt=0.00 rr=0.00
6/04/2013 21:53:37.335 : hi=14.9 thwi=9.9 thswi=-3.28E4 idp=12.7 ihi=21.2 uv=-3.28E4 sol=-32768 et=0.0
6/04/2013 21:53:37.335 : Rain counter = 59
6/04/2013 21:53:37.414 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 5/04/2013 3:08:00 a.m. raindaystart = 58.5999984741211 rain counter = 59
6/04/2013 21:53:37.437 : VP2: processing logger data entry 7 for 5/04/2013 3:09:00 a.m.
6/04/2013 21:53:37.437 : ih=68.0 oh=83.0 it=21.6 ot=15.1 wc=12.3 dp=10.8 pr=1014.972 wg=4.8 ws=3.2 wd=9 rt=0.00 rr=0.00
6/04/2013 21:53:37.437 : hi=14.9 thwi=12.1 thswi=-3.28E4 idp=12.7 ihi=21.2 uv=-3.28E4 sol=-32768 et=0.0
6/04/2013 21:53:37.437 : Rain counter = 59
6/04/2013 21:53:37.515 : Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 5/04/2013 3:09:00 a.m. raindaystart = 58.5999984741211 rain counter = 59
6/04/2013 21:53:38.382 : VP2: Setting raintotal from current station value: 59

It checks for old data at the beginning of the logger data and discards it, but then assumes that the data will be in sequence after that. Having received old data, when it finished processing the logger data, it believed it has just finished data for the 5th and it's now the 6th, so it does the 'rollover'.

Yes, perhaps it could handle this better, but I'm not aware of this ever happening with a 'real' station, and this does remind me of one of the known problems with VVP which has never been fixed. I'll see if I can work around it.

Thanks Steve. It didn't cross my mind that the software thinks VVP is the console, but of course it makes perfect sense.

I did the install just after I had just finished studying an advanced time series text for an assignment I have to do, so there's a good chance my brain was starting to switch off...
