1.2mm of rain yet its sunny

Post by grandrouge »

Hi,

Yesterday and today Cumulus has been reporting 1.2mm of rain in today, hourly and month totals yet its sunny (and cold). Weatherlink for April reports 0.0 mm of rain. The 1.2mm in Cumulus yesterday has not accumulated with the 1.2mm from this morning. Looked at editing the day file for yesterday and there was no rain.

Vantage Vue console also reports 0.0mm of rain

I have attached what I hope are the required files. Any ideas where this is coming from?

Thanks

Cumulus uses the annual rain counter from the station to keep track of how much rain has fallen. That figure isn't present in the logger data, only the amount that fell during the period of the logger entry. So it has to maintain its own counter while processing logger entries.

There is a bug in the Davis DLL which Cumulus uses to read data from the station, such that it never supplies the latest logger entry. Hence any rainfall in that entry will get missed by Cumulus. To counter this, Cumulus reads the current value of the annual counter from the station when it's finished processing the logger data; any difference is therefore the amount that would have been in that last missing logger entry, so now everything is back in sync.

However, it doesn't store the counter (in today.ini) until the next time it logs data. Because you never allow Cumulus to log 'live' data, only using it to download logger data, the amended figure never gets stored, so the next time you start Cumulus there's a discrepancy. This will continue every time you start Cumulus until it finally gets a chance to store the correct value. So the extra rain that you are seeing each time you start up is 'real' but actually fell some time ago.

To be honest (and I've said this on a number of occasions in the past), I had never envisaged anyone using Cumulus the way you do, because I'm not sure I see the point. I tend to assume that everyone is either running Cumulus all the time, or at worst stopping it overnight, allowing it to catch up the next morning.

I accept that this is a bug in Cumulus, caused by the bug in the Davis DLL and my assumptions about how Cumulus is used, but I'm not sure there's an easy fix, but I'll see if I can think of something.

The easiest way to correct your data today is to first allow Cumulus to get back in sync with the station by running it long enough to write a log entry, and then resetting today's rain back to zero using the editor in Cumulus.

Thank you for you help Steve. Will do as suggested.

I stuffed up when I bought the data logger and did not buy the version Weatherlink IP. Hence I keep the joy of my weather stats to myself and not having my computer humming away continuously.

Last price I found to right my stupidity was $195 USD + shipping.....C'est la vie !!
