Putting Cumulus Records on Line

Post by Mojos »

Hi

Not certain if I've got the wrong section of the forum but if not I'm sure someone will point me in the right direction.

I now have my weather station uploading data to Cumulus. I have tried to publish the data on my website and eventually was successful, well to a point.

I expected the data to either be displayed as a page or as a link. What happened was my website (the-owls-nest.co.uk) was replaced by Cumulus leaving me with just the data. This was in black and white but I can see a solution to that.

One of the issues has been that when I look for the webfile in Cumulus there are only 2 sets of files that will transfer I can find the 5 files referred to but only when I open them on my computer. I've installed Cumulus in a separate hard drive (E) as suggested. I've tried FileZilla and also the file manager supplied by ipage, the web hosting site, but they both reject files that don't have the correct file format.

My original intention was to make the data from the weather station available on my website so others in our natural history group can make use of it along with other material on the site. The site is under construction because the original was lost when changing hosting providers and at the moment only consists of a front page.

The main question is I suppose.... Can Cumulus be used in this manner? Oh one last thing I presume the computer linking Cumulus needs to be permanently online is it Ok to use an old laptop running WinXP for this?

I can't really follow what you're asking. Cumulus creates a set of web pages and associated images, and uploads them to your web site. A standard setup looks pretty much like this: http://sanday.org.uk/weather/. Instructions for setting this up are in the help, and in the wiki, here: http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Simple_Website_setup

Note that my Cumulus pages aren't in the 'root' of my web site, they're in a subdirectory called 'weather'. I can then link to the Cumulus pages from my web site's 'home' page, here: http://sanday.org.uk/

It needs to be running 24 hours a day if you want your web site to be updated 24 hours a day, yes. An old laptop running XP will be fine. Don't let it go into 'sleep' mode!
