Dial confusion.

Post by jjocsak »

Maybe it's just me but I was a little confused with what the dials are referring to.
I was looking at the wind speed and was assuming that it was the realtime wind speed but found out that it was the average wind speed and the wind gust was actually the realtime wind speed.

Like I said maybe it's just me but, I think they should be labeled differently.

The problem is that no two stations supply the same measurements and label them in the same way, so it's difficult to apply a name to the various wind speeds that works all the time. For the Fine Offset stations, the naming is exactly as I've done the gauges. For Davis stations the labels are close to the WMO definitions, if you take 'speed' to mean 'average speed'. So I think my choice of labels, given the restrictions on the space available, is reasonable. You can of course change the labels on your gauges if you want.
