Fine Offset - Despite the problems...

Post by mcrossley »

... can they provide any useful data. I have to keep reminding myself of this, here is todays comparison against a Davis Vantage Pro2.

Just for fun, no scientific value, blue is Davis, red is Fine Offset WH1090....
foWindSpeed.png
The pressure curves are a good match, the absolute difference varies as Davis applies a correction based on temperature & humidty etc. The FO just has a constant value applied. Sometimes they overlay almost exactly, others the FO is a bit higher or lower.

My temperatures are often lower that the Cheadle Hulme station, being closer to open country.

Well I think proves that they conclusively do, provided of course you do not get the dreaded sensor lost problem, for a fraction of the cost.

Keeping everything crossed here ( :D :D ) mine has been working without a hiccup for 1 3/4 years which means even if it fails now at current prices of a Davis Vue including data logger I could have 6 Fine Offsets giving me 10 1/2 years of use for the same price!!

Mark,
A neat comparison. And I see what looks like the Davis humidity spike issue in there as well,

The stations are about 5 miles apart, I have to admit that the comparisons aren't always as close as this and the FO radiation shield is anything but a rain hood.

While my Fine Offset station was fully working, I had a similar experience with side-by-side comparisons with my VP2. For much of the time it tracked the Davis remarkably well, but at other times it seemed almost random for some of the readings.

My FO WH3081, equipped with the standard radiation shield, shows wild temperature and humidity deviations once the sun comes out. This desperately needs to be, and will soon be, cured with a Stevenson screen.

How many extra ºC deviation can it show on direct sun vs a properly shielded station like Davis etc..?

In the case you couldn't get a screen/shield would't it be better to place the senson in the shade even if it doesn't get the 4 winds??

Is the FO shield as useless as a "naked" oregon sensor like this?

Not sure how this would apply to summer heat, but yesterday, in our garden, it was miraculously about 7 degrees warmer than in the rest of the region. ;-)

That's exactly what a Stevenson screen does ;-)
Putting it in the shade would mean putting it near the house, which gives other deviations. ;-)

I would think not.
