is there any possibility you can increase the length of the Description for Site owners? so far seems limited to 256 characters. could this be increased to say 750?

Just wondering, is there a more up-to-date version of the banner php script?

Currently I am using "Version: 3.0 - October 19th, 2008" by "Kevin W. Reed <programs@tnet.com> TNET Services, Inc."

I can view the banner directly in all web browsers, but it does not load on the cumulussites.net website (or even this forum in my signature).

The banner was working well, displaying everywhere before that well mentioned New Zealand server crash. Now I am running PHP-8 and wonder if this is where an issue might be? Or maybe the host web server is preventing the data from being retrieved? I know there are settings enabled preventing people using my images on their site by copying the URL, but wonder if there might be server setting which might now be enabled which was not previously?

Hi,
Your Palmerston North banner shows fine for me here on the forum and also on the Top Sites.
My own banner shows for me on most places but not on the Top Sites, and neither does Jenny's and Ray's. So must be a local setting or something.

Enjoy,
Paul

Hi Simon,

Sorry this is fixed. But 256 chars is enough for a description. The idea is from here they click on your banner and head to your website :)

I have five grey blobs compared to stations above and below me who have red ones.

What’s the significance of grey versus red?

Re the invisible banners :)

Today I have tested the top sites on multiple browsers and 3 different windows versions.

The different windows versions did not seem to make much difference.

However the browsers all laid out the top sites quite differently.
A few browsers had a few missing while another couple of browsers had those banners showing but not others.
For example, Beaumaris's banner appears to have a mind of its own.
It shows in 2 browsers but not in any of the others.

Matt the banner script you are using displayed randomly as well for some banners, as with Wairoa, however your banner displayed in all browsers. I dont believe it is that script but that coding is certainly old now.
As to php 8, who knows. The top sites server has upgraded to php8 from a much older version.

I still believe it depends on the browser one is using and the settings within.
These browsers now have so many security settings. e.g :
"Enable https only mode"
"Block Trackers and Scripts"
etc etc etc

I am using Firefox on a windows 7 machine with a basic security setting for my office work. I am not a great fan of windows 10 or 11. Too slow for my liking.
In my testing firefox was the only browser that displayed all banners for me.

Paul from your screenshots you appears to be using Google Chrome from my testing. I have not had a chance to play with chrome as I do not use but you could have a play around with your settings. There is plenty of boxes to tick or untick

My personal conclusion is it depends on the browser being used and the security settings within that browser.
Hence it is up to the individual as to how important this banner site is if you are checking out your settings.
... and the answer to that is, it wont be :)

Cheers
Jenny

Good for you Jenny ;)
On my main weather PC Windows 10 and using Edge or Chrome those 3 banners I've mentioned don't display but show in Firefox. Somewhere deep in the browser settings will be the key to this riddle!

Enjoy,

Windows 7 was dropped out of public security fixes over 3 years ago, and even the paid extended support ended permanently on January of 2023, so anyone really really really shouldn’t be using it anymore for absolutely anything that requires an internet connection. Also this January Google dropped all support for Chrome on Win7.

Hi Jenny,
I suspect that was due to me upgrading my banner today.
All finished now, back to a banner.png again now. (same as banner below).

I use Chrome/Edge/Firefox.

Firefox displays all non https site banners by default.
To view the non https site banners in Edge and Chrome I have to modify the settings, it's a pain but I like to see them.
Only issue is, in Chrome if I clear browser cache it clears the setting for the non https sites, so I just use Firefox now to view the page.

Kindest Regards,
Tony

Well you are really really really going to love me :)

I would have no idea as to whether there are any security fixes as I have them turned off.
I turned them off long ago after too often they just mucked things up.
Over the years I have also had to fix many PCs where the security updates have corrupted their systems. Especially driver updates.
I am not the white house or Buckingham palace no one has any desire to hack me. I am boring
This house/office has many PCs running. Most of the weather stuff is running on 2 Windows XP machines. Have they stopped the updates for that too

The rest are win 7 and the laptops win 10.
As said. I prefer win 7 for the speed. Win 10 & 11 are just eye candy to me.

Re Chrome. It runs just fine :)

Now back to loading wood into the firebox. Mid winter here and cold cold cold :P
