indexT.htm Forecast Icons

I have been trying to figure out a way to get the NWS forecast icons into the indexT.htm page. I tried it with Saratoga, but there is just too much code and too many dependencies. I have the animated icons saved to a folder, but I cannot just get the forecast like it is seen here...

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.ph ... TextType=2

I just want the icons with the descriptions; not the full text part. Is there a way to do this easily?

I want to try to get the icons and text under each one between the Cumulus Forecast and the Conditions at local time 21:50 on 29 December 2012.

Presumably NWS allow this, so do they not give instructions for including it on your web site? Perhaps Ken could advise.

I think I got it!

EDIT...

BUT... I don't like it there. I think I will just make a separate forecast page and link to it at the bottom or by clicking on the Cumulus forecast.

That just gives me a blank page :(

Sorry.

Here is how it turned out before I decided I didn't like it...

Here is how it looks now with the ability to click on the Cumulus forecast or the forecast link at the bottom of each page...

New Year's Day looks a bit odd (offset from the rest), but I guess that's a one-off as normally there are only two lines of text.

Buford,
That really looks great! I was planning to do something similar, but hate to re-invent the wheel. Mind if I take advantage or your labors and use your code?

The script is available here: http://saratoga-weather.org/scripts-car ... dvforecast

You will need PHP on your web host to use the script.

Thanks Kerry. I like your layout too (but I don't want to copy it).

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the compliment. I spent a lot of time looking at different weather websites, noting what I liked and did not like. I also visited the many template sites until I found a template I liked and could work with and I modified the template until I got it looking reasonably decent at least in my mind. My site has undergone several iterations before this current version as my skills and understanding improved.

I'm using the standalone Cumulus script for my index page which is also available at saratoga-weather.org. It was not difficult to implement.

Which one looks great? The first one with it on the main index page or the second one with it's own forecast page?

I don't mind sharing the code at all as I didn't create it, but I did a bit of modifying of it to suit my needs. There wasn't enough room on the first to put a thank you for the code, but the second one has the proper thank yous.

I like the second one - the separate page. I think it's too much information on the index page if the text forecast is there. Another way to do it is to put just the icons on the first page and have a link that either goes to a forecast page or a popup window with the text forecast. Just a thought.

I like to see the icons on the main page as long as the display is as clean as possible. That way people can get a quick look and go about their day. A link to a detailed page is good also, but it needs to be obvious. It has been my experience that many people will never think to click on the forecast in your second example, so would not know the information is there. (Like parents using a school Web page and complaining that they didn't get all the information.)

I am sitting here playing with a couple of ideas of combining the two in the right way. I'll post back later when I am done.
