Highcharts Tides

Tony (HRVistaWeather) and I have been working on presenting tide data via Highcharts, here is my first implementation...

There is a bit of a problem in that if you select 7 days or more in the lower master chart it blows up - to be investigated!

Nice; I'd find that useful (although I tend to go here: http://www.tidetimes.org.uk/kettletoft-pier-tide-times) but data isn't directly available for here. I understand you can configure a subsidiary station, but I don't know how accurate that is.

I wondered if you would be interested, there are a few other members who live near the coast/ports.

From what I remember from when I wrote a tide program for the Psion (remember them) years ago, there are primary ports, secondary ports/stations - for which the harmonics may be a little less accurate as they were sampled less frequently, or not at all since the initial data was collected - and then subsidiary stations which were based on interpolation between the nearest primary/secondary stations. So better than nothing, but they take no account of the local coastal topography.

Now the problem is most of the UK data is based on harmonics obtained by the old hydrographic office and subject to Crown Copyright (which is horrendously restrictive), the HO was disbanded and 'privatised' and the rights to this data is now 'owned' by various parties, but still covered by crown copyright. These companies will not allow you to use the harmonics without paying a fee.

Same old problem that we always have in the UK, the taxpayer pays the bill to collect the data, then we are charged to use it! The US model were anything publically funded is publically owned is much better, but don't me get started on that or I'll start on the Ordnance Survey as well.

Anyway after that ramble/rant, wxtide32 had to remove most of the UK stations from its database under threat of court action. There are only 44 left I believe. So finding somewhere local may be a problem. I do still have all the UK harmonics, but to put data from them up on your website would be to invite a 'desist' email from some heavy lawyers - nice country.

That is absolutely awesome!!
I live in between two rivers, both are tidal from Poole Harbour so this kind of thing would be ideal!
I have no idea how you do it though, it's quite a way beyond my skills.

Great work though!

I'll put a package together for the Wiki - eventually. The > 7 day issue is fixed now as well.

Could this be used in Australia? I would chuck it on my site if it could :)

Seems to tally up ok mate, the problem we have here locally is that because of it being an island we are affected by several different tide times

I do have the harmonics for several locations around Anglesey, but I can't use them without the risk of being slung in jail

Is this available somewhere? I've been trying to implement a tide page for days now and have not liked what I came up with.. I really liked the Port Huon - Tasmania page.

I like that! (belatedly) Great minds think alike. Yep, if I were doing this again I think HighStock would probably be a better choice
