Editing data - where to start?

At about 6:00PM today, my weatherstation (Fine Offset wh1081) threw up some readings that were way out of range.
Temperature, wind and rainfall were effected. These values have of course made it into the records.
I want to fix this but I'm not sure which files I should edit and in which order (if important)
A quick search didn't reveal any helpful hints.
How do I restore the previous records that have been overwritten?
Regards
Geoff

Edit the September log file. If the errors are still from 'today' you don't need to edit dayfile.txt but you will probably need to edit today.ini. Having done that, you can either recreate the records using the editor and getting it fetch the values from the log files, or just copy the alltime.ini file (and probably also month.ini and year.ini) from the latest backup set created by Cumulus when it started up (or daily in 1.9.3, but I assume you're not using that).
You might want to look at the 'spike removal' settings on the calibration screen.

Using 1.9.3, the latest beta.

Then you'll also have to correct the 'month-by-month' records, and you will have a daily backup set taken just after midnight. By far the easiest way to correct all the high/low records, assuming you haven't broken any genuine ones today, is to stop Cumulus and copy the month.ini, year.ini, alltime.ini and monthlyalltime.ini from that backup into the data folder.

Thanks Steve, I'll get started on that.
One question regarding the monthlyalltime file. The dates in it are 30/12/1899 and values are either 999 or -999 (or 0).
What is this file used for? Nothing in the wiki.

It's presumably not been added to the wiki because it was introduced in 1.9.3, which is still in beta. It holds the 'month-by-month' records. If you have any months that still have default dates and values, then you probably didn't didn't carry out the procedure for initialising the values after you installed 1.9.3.

I thought I had initialised the monthly records but I've just gone back to do it again following the instruction in the beta thread i.e.
1. Open the new monthly records editor (on the Edit) menu
2. Click the 'fetch dayfile data' button, select the tab for each month in turn and click the 'copy' button in the header row to copy the dayfile data
3. Click OK.
The timestamp of the file is updated but the values in it remain the same.
edit: The monthly values do appear correctly on my website.

I can only see values for August and September on your web site; are you sure you clicked 'Copy' for all 12 months?

The weather station has only been installed since early August, no earlier data available.

Ah, right, that makes sense.
