Cumulus Support

Hi, I don’t think this is a Cumulus fault, but I wonder if anyone has had a similar problem? I am running Windows7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 64bit. I have the Cumulus installed on the Admin account safely behind a password. I have stopped the PC going into hibernation etc so that Cumulus continues to run 24/7. To allow others access to the PC, I have opened a Guest account. When the Guest account times out and the PC drops back to Welcome Screen (showing the 2 account logins) the Cumulus stops sending data and when accessed through the Admin account some time later it shows a flashing error light with the fault cope saying that the station sensors are not detected. Am I trying to get Windows to do something it can’t?

What is the exact error message? "Sensor contact lost" occurs when the console says it has lost contact with the outside transmitter, and can occur at any time. It shouldn't have anything to do with what's happening on the PC (although some people do seem to have problems where the console loses contact with the transmitter when it is plugged in to a PC).

I've just tried this with my WMR200 (I can't try it with my Fine Offset station at the moment). I explicitly logged out the guest session, and then re-logged in my account with Cumulus running, without any problems. This is with Windows 7 Ultimate.

This is most likely a problem with Windows. On user log out Windows usually goes though and closes and shuts certain processes. One of those might be related to whatever component USB HID / Composite devices such as the Fine Offset receivers use for input. If you notice on some computers when you log out, USB mice and keyboard will blink sometimes. Not sure why it does this but its Windows. Might be for security since at logon I know windows is very picky about input devices to prevent password snooping.

For fun try disconnecting all other USB devices, sans USB mouse and keyboard if you aren't using PS2, and see if it does it.

An interesting feature I would like to see added to Cumulus would be a run in service mode. Then you wouldn't need to worry about having a whole separate account running in the background and just start up automatically regardless of user login. I had to set my PC to autologin on boot, then to lock the account after login for this very reason However it would require lots of work to separate the GUI and client and and the service work end of the program. Something thats just not feasible for such a small feature used by just a few people. It however could lay the groundwork for porting to other OS's.

That's what I did for Cumulus 2. But it was just too much work developing a completely new version of Cumulus, that lots of people weren't happy with anyway, while still supporting the current version, so I had to give up.

It however could lay the groundwork for porting to other OS's.

I'm still looking into the possibility of doing this, but it would still be a 'monolithic' architecture like the current version. I just don't have the heart for another total re-write.
