FTP Errors

Hi,

I am getting some FTP errors (Error 426 and 500). They seem to be intermittent with no real pattern. I am having an issue with the host, so could it be on that end?. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Jared

You're bound to get the occasional ftp error, but normally not enough to be a problem. Those errors are both returned by the server. Are you using active or passive ftp? You could try switching to see if that makes things better or worse.

I realize I'll get an error or two here and there, but this seems excessive (see text file). It was working much better before. I have tried active and passive modes as well, they don't seem to show a difference.

Yes, that's excessive. You're getting connect errors too.

I missed the connect errors. Would those be on my side or there side?

Those errors are the ftp component at your end saying that it can't connect to the server (e.g. 10060 is normally a timeout having had no response from the server).

Which is more preferable? Active or Passive mode?

I restarted Cumulus and things have calmed down. Should I set the computer to do a reboot once a day or so?

It depends on how the client and server are configured with respect to the ports that they allow access to. See here for an explanation: http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html

You shouldn't need to; mine runs non-stop between restarts required by Windows updates without having any ftp problems. But if you find it helps, why not. It's possible that connections are being left open, and restarting Cumulus forces them to be closed. But if that were the case, you would expect more predictable symptoms than the ones you're seeing.

To be honest, I'm no expert in all of this, but people have ftp problems and post them here and I do my best to help. The problem is usually at the hosting end.

Something must have gone awry, it was working much better before. I would go hours without errors.

How do I determine what configuration is best for me?

Do I need to do anything with my router or firewall? The thing is, I haven't changed anything.

If you use passive mode, then that doesn't require you to open up any incoming ports on your firewall/router.

I am still having issues.

I changed the FTP Hostname to the actual IP address to see if that makes a difference.

Something else has to be going on. My tweets aren't working either.

I don't see any outbound rules for cumulus, should there be one?

Edit:

So I am having trouble with Filezilla as well. That leads me to believe that it is a server side issue. Am I correct in my thinking? That doesn't explain the twitter issue, though.

If you can successfully upload some of the time, then you presumably have the outbound stuff correct.

If it's to the same ftp server, then that could be the case, I guess.
That doesn't explain the twitter issue, though.
If you turn on the debug log, the debug.log file will show the attempted Twitter updates and any failures returned by Twitter.

Man, things were working so well. I don't know what went wrong. I can get the twitter updates to work at 1 or 2 minute intervals, but not at 60 minute intervals.

I also tried to "resize web graphs" and that isn't working either.

I've no idea why that would work, looking at the code. With a setting of 60 it should tweet once an hour, on the hour. If you turn on the debug log, the debug.log file will show the attempted Twitter updates and any failures returned by Twitter.

I've just tried that and it works for me, and I know others are using it. What values are you using, and what happens?

Thanks for all your help Steve.

Regarding twitter, I'm not sure what was going on. I searched the debug log for "twitter" and could not find anything, which I thought was weird.

I ended up switching hosts, the host I had couldn't even get email to work, so that was a huge red flag right there. Hopefully that will solve some of the problems.

Thanks again for all your help.
