Cumulus on Linux or Android

Post by dunda »

I searched a little but didn't find adequate topic ... but sorry if this is doubled.

I use Cumulus on my notebook with Windows. The machine is on Wifi and is always on just for weather station. Now I'm investigating an option to use smaller computer.
There are two interesting options at the moment:
1. Something like Raspberry Pi. It can use Linux and there are weather software for it. I want to stay with Cumulus and I'm really interesting if Steve will prepare Cumulus for Linux.
2. Android phone. Small, simple, with Wifi integrated ... it can be super companion to my weather station. It can also be used as webcam with application.

Any comments, idea?

Cumulus is a Win32 application and has a lot of Windows-specific code (not just my code, but the libraries that I depend on). Porting Windows applications to other platforms is non-trivial.

I'm investigating the possibility of a version to run on Linux/Raspberry Pi. It looks like the new version (being announced this week) of the development environment that I use for Cumulus is not after all going to support Linux as I had hoped. Even if it did, it would still be a lot of work rewriting the user interface.

So I am looking at other possibilities, and at the moment the favourite is a .net application to run using the mono framework. This will be a lot of work and nothing may come of it.

An Android version is unlikely. I think the closest would be a 'viewer' application talking to Cumulus, like the existing one that uses uploaded files.
