Cumulus files - can you specify their location ?

HI again Folks

All's been running beautifully with Cumulus and the little Watson weather station recently.

Regular readers may recall that I was getting intermittent 'lock-ups' - which I think I eventually traced to the base station losing comms with the remote sensors, and getting into some strange state where it decided it didn't want to talk to Cumulus.
Moving the base station into the stained glass studio - 'outside', and giving its a dedicated PC seemed to have solved the problems - ran like clockwork....

That is until the day before yesterday when the dedicated PC went 'toes up' - had to reinstall windows (oh goody!). Of course, all the Cumulus data went west, along with the old install of Windows XP.

Then a bright thought occured! The dedicated PC has a spare hard drive, dedicated to data (mostly music) storage - is there a way of telling Cumulus to store its logfiles on the second hard drive - so that if (?when) the main 'windows' hard drive fails again the Cumulus data is saved ..?

Like the new resizable Cumulus window, by the way - well done !

Thanks

It looks like what you really need are regular backups! :)

Could you not just install Cumulus to the other drive? But that drive will fail one day anyway, so you'll still need backups.

To answer your question, there's no way in this version of Cumulus to specify the location of the data. It probably wouldn't be too hard to add; the only complication being that it would have to ask for the location at install time.

Err - yes ! <g>
Actually - I have some software that could probably backup from the C: drive to the data hard drive -
that might be a way forward

Fair enough - just though I'd ask....

You know how it is - the PC-in-the-studio was just a bright idea, to see if the radio link between the base station and the remote sensors was causing the problem.. Once it works, you tend to just leave it alone (as other things become 'important') - and then .. one day... the hard drive crashes...

Will re-visit the backp strategy!

I've just done a bit of investigation into the installer that I use, and it's reasonably straightforward to get the setup to prompt for the data folder. The only issue is that it would require use of the registry - so that Cumulus knows which folder was selected - and I've been avoiding that. But that's not really a problem.

Of course there are implications for people upgrading if they decide to change the data directory, but the setup could make it clear that it's the user's responsibility to move any existing data to the new location before running Cumulus again.
