Cumulus Support

So, I have been using weatherlink software for a long time and I upload to both WU and CWOP from a 6 year old VP1. I installed the software, went to the configuration window and filled out the basic information. I left the COM port blank because I didn't know. (Weatherlink 6.0.0 automatically detects the USB port from the logger). I closed Cumulus to go to the device manager to find my COM Port #, but couldn't find it (everything was COM0) When I went back to start up Cumulus, it froze. Won't allow me to do ANYTHING. I even have to close it down via TaskMenu (Ctrl+Alt+Del).

So, two things I guess.
1. How do I find the COM port being used?
2. How do I get cumulus to operate functionally?

OS: Windows XP SP2
Ram: 3 GB

Have you installed the CP210X driver so that the station can be driven in serial mode? You may find it on your Start menu under Weatherlink, or you can download it here: http://www.davisnet.com/support/weather ... r_ver2.exe. This should create a 'virtual serial port' which you should find in device manager. You may need to run Weatherlink and change over to a serial connection; Weatherlink may be able to find the serial port number for you, which you should then be able to use in Cumulus.

When the WeatherLink software installed itself, in the 'Communications Port' window, by default, the USB communication option is selected, and the WeatherLink software will install the USBXpress drivers.

The USBXpress driver must first be uninstall before any other drivers will be recognized by the WeatherLink software.

Inside the 'WeatherLink' directory there is a 'Support' sub-directory and then a 'Utilities' sub-directory. The utility found in that sub-directory, 'CP210X USB to Serial Converter.exe.' must be run to uninstall the USBXpress drivers.

Then, an updated driver must be installed. The one recommended (I use that updated driver on both my 32-bit and 64-bit computers) needs to be downloaded from the Silicon Laboratories web site: CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Drivers - you need to download the Windows XP/Server 2003/Vista/7 'CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Drivers' (v6.5.3 - last updated June 05, 2012).

After running the 'CP210x_VCP_Win_XP_S2K3_Vista_7.exe', a reboot of the computer is recommended.

Once the computer has restarted, go to the 'Control Panel' and select the 'System' option; in the 'System Properties' window, select the 'Hardware' tab, then click on the 'Device Manager' button; in the 'Device Manager' window, double-click on the 'Ports (COM & LPT)' branch of the three; there you should see all the communication ports available on your computer; the one you need to remember is the 'USB Serial Port (COM#)' - the 'COM' will be followed by a number - that is the number you need to enter in Cumulus.

By the way, there is no need to blame Davis Instruments for specifically designing their WeatherLink software to access their own (designed) WeatherLink interface (data logger) through the USBXpress drivers...

Thanks for the speedy reply! So I uninstalled cumulus and deleted the Cumulus folder. Re-installed, application booted up fine, as soon as I changed the input mode from Serial to USB it freaked out and froze again, all it says at the bottom left corner is "initializing". I think it's trying to find the USB port but it can't find it.

Going to go work on the CP210X Driver. I'll let you know how it goes.

It won't work in USB mode, you have to use serial mode.

Got it all! Now uploading to WU and CWOP! Thanks to all who pitched in their info!

I guess as a few side notes, the station transmits as metric units so they appear as metric on the display but appears in the proper units on WU and CWOP.
The CWOP password as default is "-1" when it really needs "-1 vers"

LOL! I wish those who still use "proper units" could catch up with the rest of the world

I wish so too! Unfortunately, NOAA and CWOP don't think there's a problem with "proper units"

Sorry, I don't understand. Cumulus displays in whatever units you set when you first ran it. You can change it if you want, but note that will invalidate your already logged data.

My understanding is that the default password is -1. The "vers" is the start of the software version (hence "vers") identification string; Cumulus adds "vers Cumulus 1.9.2" to the login string, for example.
