AWS Up and Running thanks for your help

Post by Metman »

Hi,
Metman - “Forum Newbie” (Mark in Biggleswade – Bedfordshire, UK)

I have decided to introduce myself to the Cumulus Forum as I have been reading up and taking all your posts and using your skills and experience to put together and to setup my new “Fine Offset WH1081 / Maplin N96GY” AWS System Station which I purchased last week. – Thankyou!

Especially a big thanks to “Steve” for getting me up and running on the Website setup!
You will see from my attached photos my first attempt although worked, it produced one or two problems :

Construction & Configuration:
I mounted the station poles onto a standard piece of 22mm Copper Plumbing tube, just cut-off with a small hacksaw and filed the inside of the tube and you get the best push fit possible, then apply some PVC electricians tape to hold rotational position (Do this after setting your Wind Direction to North). (Great Wireless reception through 3 cavity walls in my house to my study about 30 M LOS).

Before
Initially mounted the rain gauge and temperature/o.d. pressure sensor just below the Wind Sensor Arm but found after a few days I was getting some funny rain readings, also was getting some high o.d. temperature readings due to its exposed position (See Before Photo).

After
Therefore I relocated the temperature/pressure sensor (1.5 M from Ground) to just under the eaves of the shed roof relocated the tipping bucket to between the TV mast support bracket (2.0 M from Ground) (solid as a rock now) and shortened the Wind Sensor arm height to 3M from ground.

Result:
All worked fine more stable and accurate readings through the course of the day until I left the system on overnight and found I had about 10 Sensor Send Errors and lost data. I assume this is due to lowering the Transmitter/ Temperature/Pressure unit by about 2 M?

So this morning I have attached a piece of Kitchen (Alum) Foil double thickness behind the transmitter on the shed face and low and behold I have had no error messages since!!!
My data results have also improved significantly since 11:50 am this morning see graphs on my website : http://www.biggleswadeweather@freeglovine.com.
One problem I cannot explain is I recorder an 11m wind speed at about 05:50 this morning but it does not show up in the wind gust graph, why not, can anyone explain?
Once again thanks for all your help and you’ll be hearing from me again in the near future, I hope.

Hi Steve,

After your last post, I read every point on your FAQ but it did not register with me while writing my post today, so thanks I have now reread it and understand why now!

Also should we be reducing the sizes of images (it does not automatically reduce them like some sites) before posting I have a 24" Sony Screen so did not note the gigantic images I was putting on line, sorry!

No doubt there is a FAQ for Forum use and production that I haven't found yet? I'll go and search for it now? :)

Kindest regards

Metman (Mark)
