FTP Connect Timeout - every night @ exactly 23:15 !?

Hi,
Just wondered if anyone could shed any light on my current FTP problem?
Recently, for the past week, I have noticed that
every night at
exactly the
same time
23:15, I get the following error: ( in the error screen in Cumulus)
Code: Select all
28/06/2012 23:15:03 : FTP Connect Error, Error code = 530
28/06/2012 23:15:33 : FTP Connect Timeout
28/06/2012 23:30:23 : FTP Connect Error, Error code = 10054
28/06/2012 23:30:44 : FTP Connect Error, Error code = 10054
I have not had this problem before and am at a loss as to why this has been
happening at the exact time each night for the past week or so.
I have therefore been stopping various programs that use FTP that I had
running on my weather pc, to see if it was one of them that was causing
the problem, i.e YAWCAM and my Grabber program I wrote
https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7087.
But with them
not running (and after a reboot each time) I am still having
the FTP Connection Timeout each night.
I first thought that this was just a one off problem, but it seems to keep
happening every night at bang on 23:15.
Does anyone have any ideas why or what could be causing this? As
I am running out of options.
The only thing I have recently done is update Cumulus to version v1.9.3 (1040)
But as no one else has mentioned that they are having any problems I
discounted that it could be Cumulus causing the problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
Mark

Are you running Weatherlink or other software from the same weather station and VVP?
I was running Weatherlink along with Cumulus for the past couple of years, but very frequently VVP stopped working at 23:15, 23:30, 23:45 or 0:00, which coincided with ftp times to my web page. Those were the main stoppage times, although very rarely, I think only once or twice, it was a 0:30 or 1:30. It would stay locked up and if I was home I'd find it in the morning and have to mess around to get the logger data into Cumulus, and if I was away I missed some data, as I am logging at 1 min intervals. Fortunately that only happened once when I was away and couldn't check and fix it via a remote log in.
I just got sick of it in the end and stopped using VVP, then manually closed Cumulus to update Weatherlink each day, but was often forgetting to do it before the logger memory was full. The Weatherlink data was just getting too patchy, so I've stopped bothering with it and just use Cumulus now.

You've quoted the 23:15 and 23:30 errors, so does it fix itself in time for the 23:45 upload? If that's the case then I think the problem would have to be something that they're doing at the ftp server end at the same time every night.

Gordon:
I only have Cumulus software and do not have any other weather logging software running on the pc.
So I don't think it could be that.
Steve:
Cumulus seems to carry on trying until the FTP timeout error has corrected and then it continues
to log data etc.. successfully thereafter. As I have checked on Wunderground and there does
not seem to be any data loss, as I guess cumulus "Catches Up" on the data that it could not
send over the period when the FTP Timeout error was occuring.
Cumulus seems to handle the FTP Timeout error, where as YAWCAM hits the error and then
wont start up again, so it leaves me with an old image on my website, until I close and restart
the YAWCAM software.
So it does seem like as you suggest that there is problably something happening at the FTP server end.
I am a bit unsure what that could be, so may have to send my hosting company an email and see if
they can have a look into it for me.
Thankyou both for your replies.

I had a similar problem about a month or so ago.
Cumulus gave an FTP error code :967 FTP Connect Error, Error code = 500. This happened usually mid afternoon two or three times a week.
This caused the website to freeze etc. However, when Cumulus was rebooted all worked fine again (usually a couple of hours later when I realized there was a problem).
I contacted my host provider and they mentioned issues with the server etc.
In the past few weeks all appears to be okay, so it is possibly a server issue.

Thanks Johnny,
I think I will give my host provider an email tonight when I get back from work
to see if they can inlighten me with regards to my problem.

Cumulus seems to handle the FTP Timeout error, where as YAWCAM hits the error and then
wont start up again, so it leaves me with an old image on my website, until I close and restart
the YAWCAM software.
Because of many Yawcam to WU failures I have set my computer to do a daily Yawcam stop at 6:00 am and restart 1 minute later and that has resolved almost all the WU image upload failures, and I no longer have long periods of missed images if I am away from home/computer for a weekend out-of-town visit.

hmm, after looking at my conntection on Friday night when it gets to 23:15 not only does the FTP stop working,
my website is not accessable either!? for exactly a 15 minute period.
I have send an email of to my host provider so am awaiting to hear back from them.
PaulMy:
I have now set my YawCam to stop FTP'ing at 23:00 and then to start again at 1:00
so it goes off for an hour, then restarts, which seems to be working.

Just a quick update....
After about 5 emails and 3 phone calles to my hosting provider I have now managed
to get my FTP problem sorted out.
They ended up getting the same error at the same time of night that I was experiencing,
when they tried to access my FTP server space.
So they then ran an update on the space provided for my account. Which seems
to have cured the probelm
Now I don't have to stay up till 23:30 every night restarting my programs that
send via FTP. *phew*
