Twitter setup

Post by Nerja »

Hi all

I have been playing around now with Cumulus for about a week and set the twitter feature up yesterday and I have a question that I can't find an answer to in the wiki or on here, so...

The tweeting works fine, sending out tweets every 60 minutes, but the author website is shown as Sandaysoft (with a link). Is there any way to change this?

I am guessing the problem comes from needing to register a new application with twitter and then supplying different OAuth keys to Cumulus.

Has anyone done this?

thanks

Tony

The "via" part is set by Twitter to indicate the application that was used to make the Tweet (if you use the web interface you get "via web"). I don't know if you can turn it off or change it; do you not want people to know that you are using Cumulus?

Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply. No, its not that I don't want people to know I am using Cumulus - the idea with using Twitter (and other social media) is to drive traffic to my own website, rather than someone else's and at present if someone gets my Cumulus tweet (about the weather here) and click on it, they end up on a website about weather station software, rather than a website with information about Nerja.

Great though your software is, I would suspect its only of interest to geeky types like myself.

Its a shame if there is no option to modify this in Cumulus itself, as its a really neat feature. I will have to write some code and add the tweet feature to my website instead.

But if someone clicks on the 'via' link, which tells them what software was used to post the tweet, shouldn't they expect the link to go to the site for the software? I know very little about Twitter as I don't use it (other than having Cumulus tweet automatically) but isn't your Twitter profile the place for a link to your own web site? Or you could add a bit.ly (or whatever) link to each Tweet.

There is no option in the Twitter API to do this, as far as I can tell, which makes sense given its purpose.

Yes, I think that is the answer - add the link to the site in the tweet itself by creating a new twitter txt file. Obvious really when you think about it.

It would still be nice to be able to change the 'via' link. The way to do it, would be for users to register their own app on Twitter, then have an option to enter that oauth code into cumulus. A feature perhaps for a paid-for Professional version of Cumulus?

Thanks again for your replies, and for creating such a nice piece of software.

Hi Tony,

Remember to put (if you have not already done so) your website address in the profile of your twitter account.

This is my weather station twitter account: @np3od_wx if you want to take a look.. :)

I agree add it to your twitter profile, you can also occassionally tweet the website address along with additional info or copies of graphs from the software.. I am @garforthweather
