Help requested with getting SteelSeries Gauges working

Post by Dennisdg »

Folks

My weather site quick link is.gd/denniswx where all the Standard pages work 100%.
I'm trying to get the SteelSeries Gauges to work.

Can I have both Standard and SteelSeries Gauges working at the same time - for testing purposes?

On my web server I can see realtimegauges.txt being updated at the same time as realtime.txt
I do see that my gauges-ss.htm is being updated.
What I don't have are the SteelSeries Gauges being displayed on my gauges-htm page. However, I do have my station name together with Lat/Lon displayed so some data is being collected.

On my pc I can see the gauges-ssT.htmtmp is being created.
On my PC the gauges-ssT.htm page does show the SteelSeries Gauges -static.
I have copied the contents from the css, scripts, and fonts folders (from the gauges-ss_v1-6-6.zip) folder to the same location on the web server as the rest of my htm files.

I've believe I've followed the installation instructions and can't see what I've missed.

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks

Dennis

It doesn't look like you've uploaded the required files correctly; for example:

http://www.denniswx.webspace.virginmedi ... ges-ss.css
and
http://www.denniswx.webspace.virginmedi ... /gauges.js

both give 404 not found.

Yep, it looks like you have uploaded all the files to your root directory rather than retaining the folder structure in the zip file (with scripts, css, images folders)

Since I've changed webhost, and now I can use the realtime .txt files, I decided to switch the gauges page as well (with SteelSeries).

After some modification for the Weather Blues Template, the page is loading correctly (text is present and correctly positioned), however none of the gauges are displayed

Although I've uploaded the files / folders as per instructions, there is probably something missing!!!!

Any help/suggestions are highly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Arthur

Arthur, you seem to be missing the Jquery script from your gauges page?

Hey Mark,

Thanks for your advise.
At least I've the gauges displayed on my page, however, there is a error message (see attached) about a http error......
I think I've uploaded everything (incl realtimegaugesT.txt), but it still doesn't seem to work

Any other suggestions??

Thanks

Arthur

Arthur, the script is looking for a Cumulus processed realtimegauges.txt file at http://altonaweather.ca/realtimegauges.txt but that file is not there. You do have the unprocessed template file on your web server http://altonaweather.ca/realtimegaugesT.txt

The realtimegaugesT.txt need to be processed by Cumulus and uploaded by Cumulus to your web site, the "T" files should not be present on the web site.

The same for the HTML file really, the gauges-ssT.htm was the unprocessed file, when uploaded to your web server it was intended to be renamed to gauges-ss.htm

HI Mark,

Thanks very much for your advise!!!! It all works great!!
As a special "Thank You" I would like to send some of our Toronto temperatures over the internet (looking at your site at 1:00am, it shows "single digits"), however that's unfortunately not possible via the web :D ......(the next 7 days forecast here is only "30 and over".......)
I've changed the gauges.js file into a 30 sec "count-down" and I assume any time frame can be set?
Also, the Cumulus settings (configuration/Internet/Files - I've set Local-realtimegaugesT.txt to Remote realtimegauges.txt), remain in place I guess?

In case further quesions remain, I know how to find you :D

Cheers,

Arthur

Arthur, this thread might not be the best place ... but I have to write about it!

I have sent your 'Weather Blues' pages through the W3C Markup Validation Service and I must say/write that I am not impressed with the results - on your main Now page you have in excess of 62 errors and 7 warnings...

Unless you take the time to correct the errors on your web pages, maybe you should remove the link to the 'XHTML' at the bottom (footer) of your web pages... :(

Perhaps a "how to" on the subject of validating pages and how important it is would be a good subject for a new thread ;) .

Just in the process of making mine HTML5 & CSS compliant.

Mark, there is no 'how to' that I know of - I have been learning the use of the W3C Markup Validation Service by trial and errors, by reading the messages displayed on the result page with the 'Show Source', 'Show Outline' and 'Verbose Output' options activated - as I have done for my [link removed] pages.

Unfortunately, the W3C CSS Validation Service tests on my Tzouhalem-Maple Bay Weather Blues pages will give a lot of error messages as I am still using older code (such as '-moz' and '-webkit') in order to keep a certain amount of compatibility with the older browsers... :(

I have just completed all the modifications required to the Tzouhalem-Maple Bay Weather Blues pages ... fully HTML5 compliant - I shall remove the 'old blowers compliant CSS code' later on today.

I may not have worded that too well, I was trying to convey just how many people simply "throw" a page together and never, ever check it.

Don't you just know that some one, as we speak, is checking my pages and going to comment here ;)

As stated above
Just in the process of making mine HTML5 & CSS compliant.
But perhaps I shouldn't be doing it on my live site.

Sorry for the thread interruption :)

Mark, the number of people putting pages together and never checking for compliance with the W3C is probably greater than I can imagine.

But my point was not about everyone checking their web pages through the W3C Markup Validation Service but rather that one should not place/put/keep a link to the W3C Markup Validation Service if one does not know or simply cannot be bothered to check the W3C results when clicking on that link...

Was not me as I was enjoying the incredibly nice and rainless weather we are having on the east coast of Vancouver Island (just off the west coast of British Columbia, the most-western province of Canada :D )

Mark, the W3C Markup Validation Service only works on LIVE sites - you cannot check your pages from an internal server such as Apache (from XAMPP)... ;)

Ray,

Being a complete "newbe" and less than 2 month busy with getting some webpages together for the first time in my life, I'm not even aware of such a "validation process".
If you can give me a hint of how to correct those errors I'll have a look into it, although it might all together be way above my head, leaving your option #2 probably the best.

Thanks,

Arthur
