Davis Vantage without any Sensors or ISS

Post by SJG1976 »

Curious Question I know.
I just purchased a very cheap Vanatge Pro console for playing with.

It's not going to have any sensors at all, as it's just the console.

I know Davies don't stock any parts for these now, but for £20 I couldn't resist.

Will I be able to use it as a Baromter and Indoor Temp or anything else, or will it not work at all without connecting to the ISS?

I would imagine it would display pressure and indoor temperature without needing an ISS talking to it; the thing to do is just try it. You won't be able to do very much with Cumulus with it, as Cumulus looks for a certain amount of functionality before it tries to do anything like logging etc.

Thanks as always Steve.

Not worried about connecting to Cumulas as I'm running the OS for that, and data from the Davis won't be much use anyway.

It's more of a try before I buy purchase.

So see if I like the Davis console, sad really.....

If you ever get the urge to expand your VP1 I have a spare ISS and anemometer.

BTW I often use just the console for the testing of my clone dataloggers (works with Cumulus).

For the price I would say Davis is in a league of it's own. The kit is accurate and reliable (if well maintained) I have a VP1 that has been in all weathers for about 10 years now, and only required a little bit of cleaning to get it up to full functionality again.

I have just purchased a VP2 to develop replacement sensors, and can't wait to get my hands on it!

If funds allow I very might well consider that..

Maybe you'll get lucky and find a neighbor's ISS you can hear--just like having your own.

It's the Original Davis Vantage Pro.
I don't think these were Wireless was they?

Correct me if I'm wrong....

Anyone as far as I'm aware no-one near me has a weather station, let alone a Davis.

The VP1 came in both wireless and cabled version. I have converted a wireless ISS board to do both.

To be honest, the chances of finding another VP1 transmitting nearby is pretty slim.

To determine which type of Vantage that you have, check the upper right side corner of your console. If there is a 'plug' covering a hole, then yours is the cabled version. Also, your model number should end in 'C' for cabled. If there is a stubby antenna coming from the console, you have the wireless version.

My cabled version Vantage does show the indoor temp and RH without any other input.

It's 100% the cabled version.

Have received it today, so much bigger than the OS Unit I have.

Model number is 6151CUK

All works well, (well the bits I can use without any sensors)

So all I can do on it is temps, barometer, and humidity.

They are very nice units though....
Have to start staving up now.

Might have to consider belfryboy with his ISS, but I need to get some money again now.

Thanks for all your pointers all.....

Oh and if anyone's interested, it's also giving a forecast now as well.

Based on my location and barometric pressure, it's not too far off what we are expecting, lots of rain.

You may be being fortunate to get a good forecast from it with just pressure to work with. It would normally also use wind speed and direction, rainfall, outside temperature and outside humidity.

Ok, I must admit I'm a little confused.

I've found an ISS cheap with radiation shield now, with no sensors.
From what I've read the following sensors from a VP2 will work with a VP1

Annometer
Solar Radiation
UV
Leaf Wetness

Are there any others?

I believe the Temp/humidity sensors from a VP2 won't work though?

Or have I got it all wrong?

I'm afraid I know nothing about the VP1 and compatibility with VP2 sensors.

From what I can work out its the Temp/Humidity sensor that won't work, all the rest I believe do.

I'm not 100% sure though.
