Can't upload to Met Office WoW

Post by g4hlr »

Hi Folks.

I've looked at all the FAQ's, questions and replies etc., and tried every option I can find. The details entered e.g. Site I.D. and PIN are correct. Data is uploaded to my website hppt://csw.site40.net so I know that the link to the internet is good. is there some way I can check if data is being sent to WOW? I'm just listed as a station that has not submitted data in this time frame. Been trying to get this going since February and it's got to the stage where I'm thinking that chopping down trees might be more productive than trying to see the wood! :bash: I did wonder if it's an either or situation, ( I can either have data uploaded to my website OR, to WOW but not both?). Any help/advice would be appreciated. I'm also setting up a remote link to a cumulus weather station in France so it would be great to get this function working as WOW doesn't seem to have many sites there.

Cheers

I haven't looked at the WOW site for a while, but have done just now, and my data is updating, so it doesn't look like a problem at their end. If you turn on the debug log, the debug.log file will show the attempted updates and any responses coming back from WOW.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply. I have done so and get the following :-

-181.0036296 : 10:00:02 Updating WOW
-181.0036296 : http://wow.metoffice.gov.uk/automaticre ... s%20v1.9.2

It really doesn't mean a lot to me other than it seems to be working. It then goes on in the next line to send data to the website. Sorry to ask you again about this but it doesn't seem to give an error - well to my untrained eye it doesn't!

Regards

John

The important bit is after that, e.g. mine has this:

5079.30052 : 11:20:04 WOW Response Code: 200 Response =

which indicates that the update was successful. If you don't see that or anything similiar then the update probably isn't getting through. It appears that this station is at a school, yes? I suspect the problem is to do with firewalls and/or proxies, which is usually the case at a school. Cumulus doesn't support http via a proxy.

Hi. Will check that. You may be right about the proxy. Seems odd that the upload to my website is getting through the proxy ok but the wow data isn't. Anyway, you've given me something to think about. let you know how it goes.

Cheers

Uploading to your web site uses ftp; WOW uses http.

Hi Steve

You should really consider putting in some kind of "proxy settings" into Cumulus. I am having the same problem here where Cumulus won't talk to any website because of the (over-beefed) security settings that our Local Authorities put on school internet access.

I have Cumulus for my weather station at home, uploading to WOW and WU, and they work an absolute treat. If I could do the same with the school's station it would be an amazing teaching tool.

When I disconnect this laptop from the school network and use my iPhone's 3G signal - works fine. I have spoken to my ICT technician, who is very good, he says the problem is that you can't configure proxy settings in the program.

FYI, here is what my (the school's) debug.log says:

3252.012 : 12:15:00 Updating Wunderground
3252.012 : http://weatherstation.wunderground.com/ ... =updateraw
3252.012 : 12:15:00 Updating WOW
3252.012 : http://wow.metoffice.gov.uk/automaticre ... s%20v1.9.3
3273.072 : 12:15:21 WU Response Code: 404 Response =
3273.088 : 12:15:21 WOW Response Code: 404 Response =

P.S. When I input these addresses (with the passwords) into a browser, manually, it works fine.

I am considering it. Unfortunately I can't do all of the hundreds of enhancement requests at once.

Very understandable - given I can empathise with a massive workload/to-do list... Just thinking of all the educational establishments who could access this tool and its potential given the chance. For me personally, when I tried Cumulus at home - didn't give a second thought to anything else... So keep up the good work! ;)

I wouldn't put pressure on Steve. He has a full time job outside Sandaysoft. So, with this workload on top, his life must be a hard one!

No pressure :) as said, being a teacher in today's economic, political and social climate and I totally emphasise! The urgency is not so great however as last night I found that you can download third-party software which will force connections from programs through your proxy (e.g. http://alternativeto.net/software/freecap/), so I have it working for the time being until I probably get told off for installing such things!

I did think that there would probably be some software such as you describe. The http component I use does have a setting for 'proxy', so in theory it shouldn't be too hard to add it. A potential stumbling block is that I don't know anything about proxies, and there seem to be various different kinds. I'm assuming that all I need to do is provide a box for the proxy name/IP address (and the port?), and I pass that to the http component.

Some proxies (mainly corporate) also require authorisation, so a username/password is required in that case. Quite a bit of software also allows you to tick a box "use system settings" which picks up all the proxy info from the Windows Internet Settings - most 3rd party browsers work this way.

I've uploaded the first 1.9.4 beta with an attempt at supporting HTTP proxies: https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9433

Hi Steve,

Thanks for this. I think there may be a bug/error with the form...

I type in what I need and press 'OK' (see attached - top image). Then when I go back into the settings, the port and username have disappeared, and the password has been moved into the 'Port' field.

I therefore haven't managed to test this out with confidence, but when I do, I get a 404 from WU and WOW (copying and pasting the rtupdate into browser works fine).
