Newcomer question about "standby" mode

we intend to leave our PC running at all times to gather and display data. In the FAQ, I saw some discussion about the PC going into standby mode and I am wondering how we can keep Cumulus happy and running at all times. THANKS!

I'm not sure exactly what your question is. Basically, you can't let your PC go into any form of 'standby/hibernate' mode while Cumulus is running, i.e. you need to make sure your power options are set appropriately.

John (I do hope that is indeed your first name), how is your Vantage console connected to the computer? Are you using the WeatherLink Serial (#06510SER) or the WeatherLink USB (#06510USB) adapter (interface data logger)?

If you are using the WeatherLink USB adapter, which drivers did you installed, the ones found on the Silicon Laboratories pages?

What I am getting at... Other than preventing the computer itself from entering any 'standby/hibernation' mode, the computer should also be setup to prevent the 'virtual COM serial port' from entering into a 'low power/standby' mode.

Ray: We purchased the Davis Envoy and connect it to our new HP PC using the serial-to-USB method (our many years old Dell was serial-only). To avoid ongoing Internet connection problems and the facility's balky network, we invested in a 4G air-card service. So far, it is working very well.

Steve: I have asked a very sharp I.T. fellow I know for help with PC and com3 standby issues.
Since the station and computer are located at the UCLA facility in Marina del Rey, California, I will need to find time to get down there to implement any fixes.
Sailing season is upon us and we need our reliable weather updates!

Thanks to my IT friend, I have gone into Windows 7 Control Panel and turned off the PC's "hibernate/standby" setting and have also done the same with com3.
Thought it might be helpful if I included my Station settings.

I found it best to set my power to "High Performance," which disables standby/hibernate, then go into "Change plan settings," "Change advanced power settings," and set "Display" to 20 minutes, "Processor power state" to Minimum = 1% (so the CPU will throttle down when not needed) and "Javascript Timer Frequency" to Maximum power savings (slows down performance on some highly-scripted websites). Actually, you can set all the functions in this advanced option screen from any power plan.

In the past I had cumulus installed on a pc that was on 24/7 because it also had a function in my home automation. Since a few weeks I installed Cumulus on my standard desktop that somtimes goes to sleep mode. When restarted I see the error light blink and cumulus display that there is no connection anymore since .... (the moment my pc went to sleep). It then picks up the signal and is functioning well. However, there is a problem because when using the select-a-graph function there appears to be a hole in in the data. I have read a lot of topics on hibernation and sleep mode, but didn't see any that could solve my problem. I wonder if it is possible to force Cumulus to re-read my data logger from the moment my Pc went to sleep or if it is possible to create an option to force Cumulus to close when the system hibernates or goes into sleep mode.

There's already such an option - "Close on suspend" on the station settings screen.

It only reads logger data at start up.

Yes, but can I (manual) force it to read from an earlier date/time, so the hole in my data is recovered? Perhaps by removing records from a log file?

Edit the 'timestamp' and related informationn under [General] in today.ini; you may need to edit the log files appropriately. It's easier just to copy all of the files from one of the backup folders into the data folder. Best of all, avoid the situation in the first place by not allowing your computer to sleep while it's supposed to be doing the important job of downloading and logging your weather data.
