Setting up pressure.....how...?
What should I expect for derbyshire uk....as I write this my unit says 1013.3.....what does this mean?.
Is there a scale that I can relate this data to in my location.
Sorry if I appear stupid but this is all new to me, I am very interested in learning, just need some help to get me started... cheers...

You cant set up air pressure as it changes everyday.

Your station can show a few ways of measuring air pressure, one in Millibars (Mb) and also Hectopascals (Hpa) they are the same 1 mb is 1 Hpa. it also shows you in mmhg (Milimetres of mercury) but you wont use this so dont bother setting it that.

You station is showing the air pressure in your particular area at that point in time, it will probably be different to me and elsewhere.

However neaby stations to you may show the same pressure as you as long as they are at the same altitude to you as the higher you are the lower the air pressure becomes, so at sea level it will be far higher than say on the top of Ben Nevis.

If you look online you can see the air pressure data throughout the UK that is if you are in the UK as you dont specify where you are, I am guessing you are as you bought it from Maplin.

Best you go online and find out more info on the weather, its a fascinating hobby and I have been doing it for years, I used to work for the met office taking in info through out the day and doing charts years ago, not anymore though as automatic stations can do the same thing and sometimes more better than a person can, however a automatic station is no match for givng really good info in my opinion.

This is true, but note that reported pressures are normally corrected to sea-level, so a station near you will be reporting (approximately) the same sea-level pressure as you regardless of your relative altitudes.

This is why you have to 'calibrate' your weather station so that it is reporting the corrected sea-level pressure taking into account your altitude, and it is this figure that you should be reporting rather than the 'absolute' pressure at your station.

So to set your station console first get the Sea Level pressure from here: http://www.checkwx.com/wxmain/code/EGNX
click the Current (METAR) tab

Then set the consol to ‘rel’ and adjust the pressure, you will need to re-start Cumulus if you are using it, for the change to take effect.

You will also need to repeat this procedure if you remove the batteries in the console.

Hi, so far i have visited weather.com for my area and adjusted my device to the same reading 1028.4 around 3pm today to mirror the web site.
Is this a one off change by myself or do i monitor weather.com and adjust as needed?? this is assuming that the readings from the website are around my height above sea level??

And by the way thanks for your info... i am on a learning curve just now so i hopefully will getup to speed eventually!
Also this afternoon i have been messing around with filezilla and trying to upload my date to a free website i created on a site that i found out an hour later does not support 'weather sites' ha ha! oh well....
I know from research, this afternoon,it is very quite cheap to use a paid for site to host but i really do not like the idea of putting my card details into the internet.
So i will try other options first before i take the plunge, though i really like the idea of seeing my 'home data' online while i am at work etc...i will try to do it without the middle man...(if i can work out how that is)

By following the standard of correcting to sea level, it allows comparsion between different station at the different heights above sea level. Not that all people set the sea level reading right.

Are you using Cumulus? and can you upload via ftp. (or is that your problem!)

With Cumulus you can upload your data to several free weather sites, like The MET Office WOW, Wunderground and PWS, all you need to do is register with one or more of them and do a bit of setting up.

Re: pressure just keep an eye on it in case it looses its setting, but generally it should not need to be changed, so long as your pressure is close to other official sites in your area your OK

thanks for the info.....my station has be stable ish' when i compare to the official figures since my adjustment.
i am going to have a go at uploading to the wow site if i get the chance today.
my work can mean irregular hours so quite a few times my plans have to change but hopefully by the weekend i will be online either wow or godaddy or something simular!

One other question, my station humidity always reports higher than advertised, is this a positioning error on my part, incorrect setting or some type of fault?? as i write it is very damp though outside and the station reports 99%rh

What do you mean by 'higher than advertised'? Advertised by who(m)? Unless their instruments are located next to yours you really should be taking what YOUR station is reporting. With the sole exception of pressure (which as already pointed out should be displayed/corrected to MSL (or the old term of Mean Sea Level), all other readings are at YOUR station and, unless you know from having the sensors checked and certified, should never be changed.

You can, and will, often see variations from other stations located as close as few hundred metres from your own station - but remember, these are the reading at the site your station is located at, not at Joe Bloggs house down the road

I ment campared to stations in my area on the web. as i am new to this i will over time understand the finer points. Obviously i will make a few mistakes!!
Anyway... i am at work at the moment and looking forward to getting home and loading up cumulus then analysing my stations data....lol!
Like a kid in a sweet shop..

Look on the map and find a station close to you.

Check the data and compare with yours.

Metar is freely available and comes from airports, airfields and interested amateurs.

Its usually spot on
