Cumulus 1.85 Performance

I installed the software yesterday and it appears to be quite CPU intensive. I'm connected to a 256NC weater station via USB. Is there anything in the configuration that can cause the software to consume all available CPU?

I'm going to have to shut it down in order to do any work.

I don't believe anyone else has reported this. What OS and processor do you have? It uses around 3% on my not very high powered server - but I don't have a Fine Offset station. You could try turning off everything non-essential (if you have them turned on in the first place) e.g. realtime ftp, twitter etc and see if that makes a difference.

You could turn on the debug log, wait 10 minutes or so and then send me the debug.log file, that may give some clues.

For information...

3Ghz dual core Intel, 3Gb - It absorbs 25% when first started whilst doing the first download from the display unit, 0 to 1% whilst doing nothing and 19,880Kb of memory.

I have a 2 Ghx dual core Intel, 1 Gb memory. I hadn't noticed any issues yesterday or early this morning but after a while I noticed a real slow down in my system so I did the usual reboot. Same poor performance, could not open a web site, initiate an emal and then when taking a look at performance noticed that Cumulus has 97-99% of the CPU (it took several minutes just to get task manager up).

I shut it down in order to even log onto this forum and initiate the post.

When I restarted Cumulus again the CPU is between 0 and 2 % with about 19 Kb of memory usage and performance is back to normal.

I've tried to duplicate the problem by revisiting every screen that I can recall from this morning - I had made no configuration changes since the initial setup (yesterday). I have turned on logging in the hopes that I can replicate the issue and will send you anything that I find. I'm running no other new software.

In the interim - this appears to be a once of with no obvious culprit.

It appears that I can duplicate the issue. (Perseverence)

Unplug the USB device, with Cumulus running and CPU usage spikes to 90+% (or everything that's left). When you reconnect the device the CPU never appears to return to normal.

An error message window POPS up when you exit Cumulus but it closes too fast for me to either read or get a screen capture. I've attached the debug log but didn't really see anything in it.

For me, it means to stop the application before unplugging the USB device.

Hope this helps.

Cumulus can't handle the device being unplugged and/or plugged in. I tried to get it to work, but didn't manage it. But I've not been aware of it causing this sort of problem before, and I don't know why it's happening. As far as I was aware, it just meant that it stopped reading the data.

The file from the diags folder for this run might also be useful.

Hello steve...

in the screen capture above, whic shows his Main Display window...I noticed near middle bottom there are 3 Extra boxes placed on the display screen. I am not sure if these are they because he has a different weather station than I do, or if he somehow added them in afterwards.

My question is this...is there anyway for me to edit my main display screen, so I can add 3 extra boxes..but add in my Solar, ET and cloud base?..if it is possible, which file within the cumulus download package do I edit to accomplish this?

I am using the davis vantage pro2.

Thank you..Chris

In the display settings, tick "Display solar/extra data".

Have attached the files from the DIAG folder for this time period. Let me know if you can use any other information - I'd be willing to test something out for you.

Hmm... I had a similar performance problem with Cumulus 1.8.4 when I unplugged the USB (Fine Offset) while Cumulus was running. (All I wanted to do was change the batteries in the base station!)
I ended up killing Cumulus in Task Manager and lost a whole bunch of data.
I decided this was not wise and have resolved to be nice to Cumulus in future. I now always close Cumulus before tinkering with the Weather Station!

Another DIAGS file that might cover the correct time period.

Being nice to Cumulus is a good philosophy :)

There's a limit to how much I can diagnose and fix, not having access to the hardware.

Unfortunately none of those give any indication that anything untoward was happening. I think I may not be able to fix this, it may well be the USB component that Cumulus uses that's gone loopy (literally).

[This might show up as posted twice]

when the USB is connected and powered, the display runs from the USB - hence you can swap the batteries without anything getting upset or any data lost.
