Setting up my website

Post by Matt.j5b »

Recently I have been looking into creating my first website using the data from Cumulus and the simple website. While I am OK with computers, I have never done this website stuff and not a website expert so I hope that this will be possible.

Lately I have been my transcribing my paper records from 2009 until March 2011 onto excel spread sheets like I have been recording since April 2011 but I have changed it a little along the way, and I have also been fixing the months since April 2011 too. This is because over time I want these previous records to be included with the all time records in Cumulus so that those records in Cumulus are a true record of the all-time records since I started recordings in 2009. For example I had a only a low temperature of 12 using Cumulus but it is actually 1.9 degrees C in the winter of 2009.

I also considering including these month by month table recordings (min and max, averages etc…) on the website, but I am not sure how I going to do that, maybe a text file to upload, I’m sure someone could advise. Also because Cumulus recordings are off slightly I might include the real readings which is only some of the recordings but that might to be harder because I update those manually each day on to a spread sheet. (the day temps can be up to 0.5 higher, and overnight temps 1 degree C higher in summer and 2 degree C in winter and maximum humidity 6 per cent lower and because I use the logger the wind gust for each day is off slightly). But my manual recordings has correct readings, but I am not sure how I would include that. Advice would be helpful.

I have looked at the wiki, setting it up looks a bit tricky, but I guess I have to start somewhere and I take it step by step. But to start with, I give setting up the site a go. Regarding web hosting I will use the free hosting that Glovine provides and I did make an inquiry to Glovine and I can obtain hosting while they work on the new hosting. I did double check with Zymic and they still don't allow weather sites.

I will be updating the site once or twice a day, when I can, because I not willing to make any commitment to uploading all the time, anyway I run Cumulus off the logger and that works fine. I won’t bother with any realtime. My question is would the standard website work fine without auto update ticked because I will just do the manual web update. Anyway that my plan.

Yes, a manual update is just the same as one done using auto-update, the site would work just the same. You would probably want to remove the Flash realtime gauges from the gauges page (the section to be removed is marked in gaugesT.htm).

Steve, thanks for that, I was hoping that was the case. :D As I don't need realtime I will delete that, thanks for reminding me. I am making a few changes to the pages before i set it up.

Just set up my site, without trouble. Uploaded the files and the image to the image folder with FileZilla. Entered the setting in Cumulus. Click file, web web update. And bingo I got my website. Easy as, :D . I thought is was going to be so hard. I created a extra page called About. I got some trouble uploading that, which I got to fix, so don't worry if you get page not found for that page. But apart from that it worked.

Edit: btw only updates twice a day

I am having trouble with the extra page. It keeps creating a tmp file instead of the one I created. In the internet setting, I entered the local AboutT file and remote file of About, tick Process and ftp but it doesn't work properly. Have I done that right.

I finally got the about page working, since I written it based on the index page, using the web tags, and I was viewing it locally to make it work properly. So then I checked the files tab of internet settings and read the help file for that, and I found I have made three mistakes. I had for the local:C:\Cumulus\web\aboutT.html and the remote of C:\Cumulus\web\about.html so that I view it locally before setting up the site. But I was not thinking because it not local anymore, so I changed the remote to the directory in the webspace (/public_html/about.html). I also had to tick ftp,but I did have the processed ticked and I by mistake made a capital in the A for about in both file names . Lesson learnt. I think that is how it is meant to be. ;)

This page is important because my situation is not so simple because I didn't use Cumulus from the start in 2009 and I use 2 weather stations and a manual rain gauge.
