Help please with Website creation

Hi
I am a complete novice when it comes to even the simpliest of website creation but with some help of the Wiki in here and the help at my hosts, after several hours I managed to get it up and running.....or so I thought.
I could not get the pages to update despite several forced web updates through Cumulus - despite this all of the pages displayed correctly.
This evening I decided to have another mess around in places I'd never been before and made the situation worse.
The front page is still displaying the out of date data and most of the others nothing.
I understand to an extent why the other pages are blank as the sizes of the .htm files are zero K - what I don't understand is how it happened !
My questions are - what is the best way to get back to where I was and is there an obvious reason why the pages weren't updating ?
I also understand that my enquiry may be too vague but my lack of an overall understanding does not help.
Thanks in advance to anybody that can help.
Regards
Graeme
