Wildly fluctuating Temperature data

My temperature data has been fluctuating wildly since last night.. We have had over 4.5 inches of rain (the first good rain since I installed the system) Anyone know the cause of this inaccurate temperature data or how I can fix it.. Its reporting 20 or 30 degrees colder or warmer than actual at times, sometimes with each reading. This is occuring both on the console and on Cumulus. (The temperature in my area has stayed a very constant 50 plus or minus 2 degrees since last night according to all of the other local stations)

I haven't deleted any data from the PWS site.. You can see that this problem started last night when we had heavy rain and thunderstorms. http://www.pwsweather.com/obs/HARLIGANS.html

Edit-I removed the sensor, blew all the water off it it and dried it with compressed air as best I could, replaced all the batteries, reset the console, and it still seems to be giving me erroneous temperature readings...HELP!

Have you dried out ALL the connector plugs including the wind sensors, if that fails look inside the wind sensors for dust and damp.

Hi,

Yes, you probably have water in one of the Wind cable connectors (or in the vane head). You should be able to confirm this by unplugging the wind cable from the transmitter unit.

The transmitter uses the same Analogue/Digital converter for both the external temperature (thermistor) and Wind Vane position (resistors). Unfortunately the A/D input is permanently connected to the cable, so any leakage or crosstalk between the cores (e.g. when the vane or anemometer rotates) can introduce "spikes" onto the temperature reading.

Thoroughly drying the connectors, etc. should cure the problem, or WD40 (aerosol) might help (but it has been suggested that WD40 may damage the plastics).

We will see.. I just unhooked the wind connection from the transmitter unit at 11:25 Central time...

It looks like that was the problem, judging by the results on the pws site.. Now to find out where the water is... I do have an extension in the line....I am thinking that could be the problem!! Thank you very much for the advice here!

It looks like the water was in the in-line connector that I used to connect the original wind connection to the extension that was necessary to put the temperature sensor/hygrometer down in the shade and out of the sun.. Has anyone seen an outdoor or all weather inline connector? The only ones I have been able to find are made for indoors and offer no rain protection..This is not acceptable...

I put mine in a small plastic box, cut a small notch for the wires and sealed it up with silicon sealant. lasted for two years so far.

Try sealing your connections with self-amalgamating tape. This is the product used to weatherseal all sorts of outdoor connection including the coax ones found on aeriels and satellite dishes.
