Auto stop and restart program

Hi,

Are you saying that you couldn't find an equivalent sequence for Win.7 ? I didn't think it necessary to suggest that if Win.7 is different, then somebody should post a suitable sequence.

NO I didn;t find or look for another sequence - simply that the key strokes you posted go to Programs. To put it (very) bluntly it wasn't hard to google or check myself.

I am not at my home computer but you've got an excellent suggestion. I've tried here on another Windows 7 system and

Windows [start], then the [up arrow] key to highlight 'Shut Down'
then [Enter] to select Shut Down and get the 'Log off user' prompt
then [down arrow] key to get 'Shut down' prompt
then [Enter] and hopefully it will proceed to shut down from there.

The only issue could be that I was in the midst of editing a webpage file and had several programs and files open - Notepad++ and FileZilla, in addition to Cumulus, Yawcam, Toolbox and Sunrecorder, when the monitor or card all of a sudden just kind of popped and went out. And I wouldn't actually pull the plug, I'd do the 'hold down power button' until it stopped.

If I'd had remote access set up for this computer would I have been able to control the computer then if the video card is the problem? And what would be a good program to install for such remote access?

There's no difference between pulling the cord and holding the power button down! The only reason you have to hold the power button is because your BIOS is set to a 4-sec delay (it prevents you from hittig the button accidentally and shutting the PC down.

Also - Start then arrow-up on 3 different Windows 7 systems here ALL take you to Programs. Also be aware that the Shurdown button on the Start menu isn't always set to power off - it can also be redefined as Log Off Current User, Sleep, Hybernate as well...

What machine would you be trying to access it remotely from? If a similar or later version of Windows, Remote Desktop (part of Windows) is ideal BUT you need to ensure you log on remotely as someone with enough privileges to do a shut down - it is possible to do a remote access session but not have access to some features (such as reboot and shutdown) (2 of my file servers here at home are both inaccessible and locked up so are both administered remotely this way).

The easiest, secure and free package I've found is Team Viewer http://www.teamviewer.com which allows full control and reboots. For Home use it's FREE so certainly worth a try, I think you'll find it does everything you need.

I always use "Logmein" and again that is free and secure, have never had a problem with it.

I tried the keystroke routine that I had from the other Windows 7 unit but without success and had to do a forced power down. Then restart and the monitor came back on just fine so not sure what the problem was but for now all okay. A lot of worry for nothing I was able to start everything back up again except that Sunrecorder is not displaying any data so will have to check this out further.

And for this Windows 7 computer the sequence to blindly shut it down would be -
[Windows start]
[right arrow] to get to the 'Shut down' selection
[Enter]
then lists all the applications that are open and [Force shutdown] and [Cancel] options displayed. I know 'Cancel' stops the shut down process and presume 'Force shutdown' would then directly do a shut down but I didn't try this.

And the Yawcam auto restart at 6:00 am is working just fine.
