FTP login and authentication

Post by joem »

Hi

I am having a problem with my web update, in that it appears that the FTP server is regularly taking over 30 secs to authenticate once the password has been sent. I have checked this using another computer running AceFTP.

My service provider is Kingston Communications  who, suprise , suprise are saying it is my software at fault.

How long does Cumulus allow before it "FTP timeouts"

The timeout is 30 seconds. Could you turn on the ftp logging then we can see what the ftp log says (ftplog.txt file in the Cumuus installation folder).

I could provide an option to increase the timeout if that would help. It seems like a very long time, though. Are KC saying that this is normal?

Actually, it looks like the FTP component has its own connect timeout of 20 seconds, and Cumulus tries 3 times before giving up. I also seem to be running my own 30 second timer. I have no idea why I'm doing this!

Steve,
thanks for the prompt reply.

I have had the FTP log running for sometime now so it is now over 3Mb, would I best send this directly to an email address?

KC, I suspect are seeing this as a commercial use of home webspace and have done this deliberately as every time I complain it is rectified and runs normally for a while.

KC are giving nothing away with regards to normallity but being a home based Telecomms worker I have only had problems like this when logging into networks in remote parts of the world.

20 secs is ample time to expect a response and I only wanted to confirm the Cumulus timeout.

I will now carry on getting KC to provide the service I pay for.

Excellent software and once again thanks for such a prompt reply

I've been running some tests myself so I don't think I need the log now, thanks.

I think I understand what happens now. There is no setting on the ftp component for connect timeout. From what I can gather, it uses the system default, set in the registry somewhere, which it appears is 20 seconds. My 30 second timer only runs for the first connect attempt, not the retries. I think there must have been some circumstances where the normal timeout didn't occur, so I put my own 'backstop' in to stop it hanging.

I'm from Pocklington originally, by the way, not far from you, I think.

Just around the corner, so I do not have to explain the KC monopoly/ dictatorship we have to endure here. :x
