am i getting somewhere?

Hi all

I now have some webspace and an ftp server and filezilla and I can get them to display,,,, sometimes. However i don't know what to do next.

I have a
webspace address and password
a username and password
port 21
Filezilla

I need a directory in my ftp, How??
sorry to be so dum but Its took me several days to get this far
But I do like finding out .

any help would be appreciated thanks

If you are setting up the 'standard' Cumulus web site, and are happy for your Cumulus pages to be in the 'root', i.e. to appear at http://www.weather-hapton.talktalk.net, then it looks like you can just leave the directory empty and upload the necessary files etc to the place you have shown in your screen shots.

Hi Marshall,

This is going to sound a little tuff but you really need to have a go yourself as that is how you will learn. I assume you have read the help http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Simple_Website_setup and what has been provided by TalkTalk "Example of free FTP clients:

FileZilla
Open source software distributed free of charge under the terms of the GNU General Public License - http://filezilla-project.org

Connect to the site using the details above then use the FTP client like your Windows File Explorer. Drag a file from the server from your computer to upload, drag and drop files from the server to your local computer to download, click on a file on your computer or the server and Delete to remove the file.

Once the files are uploaded, you can check your web site by entering the web address into your browser: e.g., http://www.yoursitename.talktalk.net

Once you've had a good go yourself you're more likely to get help from the forum. However, I may be wrong and there may also be someone on the forum who is prepared to do as you have requested.

I've realised that I can make the process of setting up the web site slightly easier by changing the structure of the 'webfiles' folder - I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I am changing it so it completely mirrors the required web site structure. Attached is a zip of the new structure. All you now need to do is unzip the contents to your ftp server, preserving the structure, and you're done.

It's never that easy Steve, that is what I have done with the steelseries zip. It is amazing how many people just unzip it to a flat directory - maybe the tools they use don't make the structure obvious, but...

In the case of Cumulus, it's not normally zipped, so hopefully the structure is more obvious. The change I've made is to create the images folder, and move the background image (picture.jpg) into it. Hopefully in future we will see fewer cases of people omitting to create the images folder.

thanks for the zip file steve I now have what I think are the files required but I am stuck on getting an IP address as the configuration keeps telling me I have failed the configuration test for that reason . Could you please have a look at the attached file and see what you think. If anyone can help I would be gratefull.

What is the IP address for? For Cumulus, you can just supply the name of the ftp server (www.weather-hapton.talktalk.net). What is the configuration test that you refer to?

In filezilla under settings and in the filezilla help page it advices to do a configuration test using the settings link. I have been playing with for some time but it always fails.

From what you say I must be way off track in what part of Cumulus would I place the server address http://www.weather-hapton.talktalk.net

From what I can see above:

you have successfully connected to the ftp server. You then get a timeout, but it's not clear whether this is because you had left it sitting there for a while. Assuming that's the case, once you've logged in again, you need to copy over to the ftp server the files extracted from the webfiles.zip file that I uploaded. Then you can configure Cumulus.

Well, it's some kind of progress, but you seem to have copied lots of files and folders from your PC to your ftp server that are nothing to do with your web site.

If you delete that index.html file from your server, then the Cumulus index.htm page will become the default and your Cumulus site will start to appear. But to be honest you really ought to delete it all and just upload the files that you need to upload.

It list the only files you need to upload. Then follow the procedure to configur Cumulus

Core files
Firstly, we need to get several files onto your webspace. This is a one time only exercise but is essential to the operation of your Cumulus website.

Configure your FTP tool to connect to your webspace. Once done, make your connection and change to the correct directory/folder on your site, as advised by your provider.

You may wish to create a sub-folder to store your weather site, but for this purpose we will assume not.

With your FTP tool, locate the ‘webfiles’ folder within the Cumulus folder on your PC. Upload the following to your webspace (using FTP)

weatherstyle.css
wz_jsgraphics.js
CumulusRealtime.swf
dbimages (this is a folder, so upload it and all of its files will also be uploaded)

now create a folder ‘images’ This must be in lowercase, with no quotes.
