This all speaks volumes about the robustness of Steve's code - hearty thanks go to Steve :D

I am very interested in running Cumulus as a service, but had not attempted yet because of the very issues discussed above. (I might have a go at it now.) I have contented myself with just putting Cumulus in Startup and enabling Automatic logon to get round the problem for now.

It occurs to me that it should be possible to 'modularise' Cumulus into 'datalogging' and 'UI' components. The 'datalogging' components could then run happily as a service leaving the UI part to be run as and when required (possibly even over a network as a Client/Server type of application).

Is this a reasonable suggestion for a future release Steve?

Mark

Yes - I did in fact make a start on this quite some time ago, but didn't get very far with it. I'd been intending to make version 2 completely client/server based from the outset, and I'm still considering it.

Hi guys, this may be a little off the point, but it may just help. It seems that you lot have a grasp of computers and servers. I looked into getting WHS to run my weather station but found it too long winded because of the microsoft limitations. This is the solution that I used instead.

I use one computer (which happens to be dedicated to my weather station) to FTP to my server (which is what you seem to want to do). Rather than using WHS though, I built a really cheap PC using parts I had lying around, it really doesnt have to be high spec. I then installed FreeNAS onto it. This is a free server system that you can get from their website. I installed it and connected it up to my network. FTP is easy to enable on it, and you can then use the built in web server to run the files. Easy as that. Takes a little playing around, but I have never seen FTP move so quick! You can then navigate by pointing your browser to the server name (for me http://weathersrv). If you have DnyDNS settings on your router you can set this up as well and get a free website! You can see mine working at http://bheadon.homeip.net/weather.

What makes this solution good, is that the server can be used to serve other web pages as well, file sharing, iTunes sharing etc etc. However it does mean you have to get another PC to run it :(

Hope it helps, and if anyone wants to know more about how to set up FreeNAS to work, just ask away.
