Hi all

My first post on this subject. I hope someone can help

I would like to know how much web space would be required for a Basic/ Medium / super weather website as I have no idea at all. My provider will allow me 15mb of webspace, and I am wondering what calibre of website I could get for a given webspace.

I am hoping this is a reasonable question (Iam not even sure of that)

The basic 'standard' Cumulus web site takes about half a megabyte. The Silverlight 'realtime' application is about a megabyte. You can, of course, expand on the basic site considerably, but I would have thought that 15 mb was ample unless you plan to have large of numbers of images, for example.

The other side of the coin though is that any web provider that is only allowing 15Mb of web space isn't a web provider in any sense of the word in todays climate (bad pun I know). If this is all they are allowing you (and I am presuming this is not an ISP you are talking about here but a web host) then it might be worth you looking around for another host....

And find out how much bandwidth your allowed too

Mine is 288 Mb with over 100 photo's. So 15G should be able to hold 53 of my websites! As a minimum, you'll need to make sure they allow weather websites (some don't! Due to the constant uploads), make sure they allow .txt files, otherwise you won't be able to use the gauges (CumulusRealtime & realtime). It'd be good if they had .PHP (bad if they didn't), this allows you to further upgrade your website. Make sure you check the Wiki too for help. You may want to pick you ISP on these guidelines too, as some ISP's will offer all of this FREE.
And the other route is to host your own. IT"S FREE! But suffers from constant downtime everytime your computer turns off. Or crashes. Or your internet conection drops out. Or your computer DIES!

As for hosting yourself - most commercial ADSL and cable ISP's don't allow that - the penalty for being caught is usually instant, and permanent, disconnection.

Holy C*&p, YES! It does say 15Mb. . As for penalties for hosting yourself, I didn't know that. Guess I've been lucky all these months (checking now......please wait while www.guiltyas.com loads.....)

Getting off-topic a bit - Telstra tend to turn a bit of a blind eye provided you don't hog the local system/bandwidth. Optus don't allow it and can get quite nasty about it, TPG are a bit like Telstra. It all depends on how much traffic you are pushing/pulling on your connection.

One of the ways around it is by the use of non-standard port numbers (the way I do my home hosting) but then you also need a dynamic DNS allocated (such as using dyndns.org).

The other side of this coin is you then have the t-nazis try to control you (the one that springs to mind is the map of Cumulus users who refuses to list you if you don;t have a port 80 web site because 'your host doesn't allow you to host your own server' without knowing all the facts!).

No dramas here what so ever with using Internode. I've got a few bells and whistles happening on my site now and it's using 1.5Mb. My bandwidth on the other hand....

What a lovely range of answers. I think I will delve into Steve's answer and see what my provider can do for me ( I am with Talk talk for everything ) however as you will realise I have a lot to learn (even just understanding some of the answers) but it would be nice if I could get a basic website up and running. Going to have another look at what is available with the 15mb talk talk are offering me.
