Try restarting the base station (batteries and USB cable both out) if that does not cure it then zip up the Cumulus diags folder and post it.

Your station has stopped responding.
16.12.2011 20:42:40.339 : 20:42:40 EWUSB: Found Fine Offset station
16.12.2011 20:42:40.339 : Loading last N hour data from data logs: 16.12.2011 14:55:02
16.12.2011 20:42:40.917 : 20:42:40 EWUSB: Get history data
16.12.2011 20:42:41.558 : Request EW data block, addr = 000000
Someone else in another current thread has the same problem. If removing the batteries and unplugging the USB cable didn't get it going again, then I don't know what else to suggest.
If you have Easyweather installed, it might be interesting to see if that can talk to it.

I don't think anyone knows why it happens; if you look around the forum you will see lots of other users whose Fine Offset station lock up for no obvious reason (and some of them aren't using Cumulus, so it's not a Cumulus issue).
