Can you convert a wireless station to a hard wired one ?

Getting regular dropout of comms to sensors due to location I am forced to use for base station and sensors. Is it possible to convert these to hard wired ?

I am pretty sure I have seen someone do something very close to hard wiring with a Davis wireless station by wrapping one end of a wire around the transmitter antenna and the other around the receiver antenna. Harder to do with Fine Offset stations, I guess, as their antennae are internal.

Now that's showing a bit of ingenuity  You could build a small Jpole/dipole style antenna on a piece of circuit board and place it next to the transmitter and another at the receiver (with coax in between), but my guess is that any signal would probably be fully absorbed in the wire by the time it got from one to the other.
I've seen a couple of posts about modifying the internal antennas, not sure if it would be possible (or practical) to bring them external to a higher gain antenna to improve your distance?
