Custom Graphs

Post by Cambium »

Has anyone taken the text and inputted them into excel to create your own graph? If I figure out how I'll try to remember to post it here.

Only reason I would like to do this is because if you extend the "select graph" data out more then 2 days, the graph in Cumulus doesnt expand and just compresses everything.

So I copied the data into excel from the December11 Log but I need to find a way to eliminate using every 3 minutes of data. Would like at least 15-30 minutes worth. So I need to figure out how to grab that and then creating the chart will be simple.

Would like to have all this happen within 2 minutes time so when i want to make a chart it wouldnt talke long to do,.

Ok...all in all from start to finish it took under 10 minutes... I used the day file and took the Min & Max temps...

Any thoughts?

Did the fact that the dates in the data logs are in UK format cause you much difficulty? Was it just a case of telling Excel the format when you did the import?

Your data at the start looks a bit odd. It starts in October for a few days then jumps back to September?

Yes...Excel wont let me format the date into U.S style. Even if I choose the locale as U.K there's no format for month/day/year.

Anyway around this? I also noticed like mcrossley mentioned that the data in the day file that it goes from october to September to october. I guess I should just delete the duplicates.

The date format when importing needs to be figured out.

It looks like there may be other problems with that file too. Notice how some of the date years are four digits and some two.

Is there a way to grab just 30 minutes of data from the files as opposed to every minute that I have? Without the obvious way of deleting them in excel myself.

Are you trying to do this 'on the fly' or as you just need to see it? If the former - does your site have PHP available? This link shows data generated 'on the fly' from accumulated data - daily, weekly, monthly and yearly data all being generated only when the page is displayed:

http://mtb-images.dyndns.org:1088/local-graphs.php

and the graphs on the front page also, only being generated when the page is displayed - so they are always the most up to date graphs available

Not sure I understand what php is...Im live on W.U but I mostly just want to create the graph myself occasionally.. When i import into excel I need to find a way to eliminate the every minute data and just used every 15 minutes or so. Maybe it's a formula I have to find for Excel itself.

However an on the fly graph sounds pretty neat. Those links went to an Australian site.

Probably because that's where I am on this fine Sunday morning :)

Just about to go out for a while but when I come back will give you some hints on Excel formatting of large blocks of data that should help - but first of all - try formatting the column the dates are in (highlight the column and right click/format). Under Dates (wording may alter depending on the version of Excel you are using) you have the choice the format you want to use *or* at the bottom of the list is Custom where you can define your own custom display format.

Let us know the version of Excel you are using.

How are you bringing the data in? Directly from a Cumulus log file? If so, which one (presumably the detailed data file? (eg Dec11log.txt?)

I just opened my Nov10log.txt file and it imports without any problem. The date column (column A) can then be highlighted, right-click and select Format Cells, then select Date and I am able to change to display format to anything I want.

Given that you had a couple of dates with inconsistent formatting (eg some with a year as 11 and some with 2011) it would suggest (without seeing the data) that either you have changed for format within Cumulus at some stage or have alreay changed/played around with the data within the log file.

So - on this, I then selected two columns (date and temperature or column C), selected a graph to generate (line) and bingo - I get a graph showing data with x labels (that the correct one? The data label along the bottom) showing dates every 3 days even though this is a minute by minute log file. I can change how often the date is displayed by right clickming on the dates on the axis and then selecting Format Axis - this then allows me to change the major and minor units on the axis - so, if I only want dates shown every 7 days I change Major Unit to 7 (from Auto) and minor I leave as Auto or 1. I can also change the date format within this Format Axis pop-up.

It sounds like the data itself is inconsistent i.e. it needs to all be formatted the same way for Excel to be able to properly format it as a date for you - that would be the first thing I would check.

PM me if you want any further help - if you have Skype that may be an easier way (no video this end though :) )

Date format not working but not a big issue. Volume of data making computer respond poorly. Im using Dec log.. Only 3 days worth of data 1 minute intervals... I need to figure out how to cut that "before" making the graph now.

I used 3 rows, Date, Time, Pressure. The time ends up on the bottom but when I go click on Format Axis changing it from 1 to 100 seems to make it worse and crash.
