WebGL Earth

Post by mcrossley »

Nice 3D globe in WebGL and HTML 5 Canavas - no plugins required and runs on mobile devices too.

This would be cool for the Cumulus user map!

Edit: Except for the lack of support in IE9 :(

It said my just updated FF no good !

Had to update my (not very old) NVidia drivers - the beteljuice hates updating 'important' drivers

There is a fairly widespread feeling that webGL is evil and a road that should not be gone down. I tend to agree as it means browser client code is diving into low level drivers to access OpenGL. However 'serious' graphics work with HTML5 is stuck at the moment with a 2D canvas and no real access to GPU acceleration. I'd love to have native 3D access in HTML5, then I could get rid of Flash, but Flash allows me to write shaders for the GPU to get performance.

The webGL Earth demo is still pretty smart though!
