NOAA Report Cool Deg Days / Heat Deg Days Not Working for me

Hello, thanks in advance for anyone who might help me figure out the NOAA setup and what's going on.

I can seem to get the NOAA reports to tell me the proper "cool deg day" values... here's a sample of the report so far for this month and August since I started my station, and my setup of NOAA config:

As you see I have the threshold set to 65F for both heat and cooling, much as everyone else has it set up. Yet you can see I have days where it gets under 65F yet it will not report a "Heat Deg Day" value. I am currently running Cumulus 1.9.2 build 1011. Can anyone explain why I'm not getting a Heat Deg Day value, and only Cool Deg Day values? My understanding of it is if its bellow the threshold for a portion of the day, it will report a heat degree day value, and if its over 65 it will report a cool degree value. And in my data you can see the Min/Max values for the day in many cases are higher and lower than their respected thesholds.. yet not heat days :?: :?: Again if someone could point me in the correct direction I would greatly appriciate it. Any other suggestions for my NOAA setup would be appriciated as well.

It's quite possible that there's a bug in the heating degree days calculation under some circumstances. Do you have Cumulus running all the time or does it use data from the logger sometimes?

Are the figures in dayfile.txt the same as in the reports? How long have you been running a build of Cumulus which calculates degree days (build 1004 or later)?

For future reference, if you're posting something that's formatted, it's best to put it in "code" tags, or attach it as a zipped text file.

I edited the above quotes to code tags, sorry about that.

The figures in dayfile.txt are exactly the same as the reports. (Even Cooling Deg Days and Heat Deg Days, and min and max temperature).

Cumulus runs 24/7 connected to the station(A WS-1090). I only receive logged data if I do a system reboot normally and if it does it's only one archive record, if any. The week of August 28th however I was without power for 4 days (Hurricane Irene knocked it off) and when power came back on it did download 4 days worth of logs from my station's logger. The data appears to be fine though when I view it in graph or look at those days data (Except it only logs every 10 minutes where as I have Cumulus to log every minute, however that's how the station is designed I think).

I have been running a build newer than 1004 since I have started my station. (I only started my station August 13th this year, so I started with release 1006 or 1007 and have been upgrading ever since.) I only started doing NOAA reports on Sept 6th or Sept 7th when I installed Ken's PHP Template and that's the first time I ever saw Cool and Heat Deg days and noticed the issue. It could have been occurring for a while before that though.

What have you got for heatingdegreedays in today.ini? For how long during each day is your temperature below the threshold? Could it simply be that it's not long enough to register 0.1 degree days?

steve wrote:What have you got for heatingdegreedays in today.ini? For how long during each day is your temperature below the threshold? Could it simply be that it's not long enough to register 0.1 degree days?
In today.ini...

Code: Select all

HeatingDegreeDays=1.34708690643311
CoolingDegreeDays=0.471916556358337
In yesterday.ini

Code: Select all

HeatingDegreeDays=0.00749999145045877
CoolingDegreeDays=48.1883163452148
So I'm pretty sure this is user error and my fault for not setting up the thresholds when I first setup Cumulus... :bash:

I think I see something. Up until late yesterday (10pm, 11pmish) the threshold was set to some other number. For the life of me I can't remember what it was, it's whatever it was by default since I had not changed it till then. I changed both thresholds to 65F then, which is why today's data so far seems correct, and there's a small amount for Yesterday.ini. For the record it will be above and bellow the thresholds for a majority of the day. In last few days it's between 75F and 80F in day, and 55F-60F at night.

So the data just appears to be off since I had never set up the thresholds properly when I started my station. My guess is today's readings, once the day is over and I can generate the NOAA report, should be accurate. I was somehow thinking it would adjust my Cool Deg Days and Heat Deg Days data for the reports after I changed the threshold, however that's not possible since it records the threshold on the fly and adds to the total for the day as the temperature changes and such. Is there anyway to get Cumulus to re-parse my logs to generate the correct data for the new threshold in the NOAA reports? If that is not possible, would editing dayfile.txt (and yesterday.ini) and setting all Cool Deg Day and Heat Deg Day values before today to 0 work? (Just so it shows 0 instead of a crazy number for the past month or so data prior to when I changed the threshold)

p.s. sent ya a few £ for a pint or two on me :D. Thanks for all your hard work and near instant replies for help!

The default is 65F for both heating and cooling (I've just deleted my settings from cumulus.ini to test it).

You can get Cumulus to recreate the values but it doesn't have sufficient data to do a full calculation, so it simply uses the daily average temperature, hence you either get cooling or heating for the day but not both.

Ah, hold on, that's not quite the whole truth. The default is 18.3 if you use C and 65 if you use F. But when you first run Cumulus, the default is C until you change it, and hence the default threshold is 18.3, probably. I'll see if I can fix that.

Ah yep that's what it was set to before I changed it, 18.3. I was thinking it was something like that was the C default temp since it was way to low for a threshold for F.

Since I can't get it to do a full reading like you said, (Just using the average temp where it gets either cooling or heating) I think I will just set it to 0 for the last months of data prior to when I changed it from 18.3 to 65 last night.

I will post September's NOAA report once today is over to verify all is well.

Hey at least we managed to find a bug out of this "whoopsy" I made. :)

Yep, after the day reset the NOAA report generated correct numbers for today.
