Heads up for lifecam cinema users

Post by Flying Eye »

Hi all,

I had a lot of trouble with most of the software out there, yawcam would not do it's thing for me, and webcamXP drove me crazy with the non stop requesters from the system tray, it was like a small child, constantly over sharing because it was doing what it's meant to but just had to tell some one, anyone, or even everyone, every single time! :P

Then this morning, I found Fwink. This is well worth a tinker with. It is free, simple and just gets on with it. On top of this, it is open source or so the author claims. I'm having mixed results due to truecolour mode, but that can be a bit variable, with some tinkering it gets pretty close to being easy to set up. Lack of bloat is very refreshing indeed. It allows you to specify a save directory and a single file name, you can turn it's FTP off too, and just use Cumulus!

I've written to the author for more details about the open source bit.

I did notice that it makes the Microsoft software break, in that it claims there is another program using the camera when this is no longer the case, and a quick run and quit of webcamXP sets that right.

All in all , this could be a reliably available solution for Cinema users with Win7 Home SP1 64 bit. You don't get to say that very often!

This is where I got it from: http://www.lundie.ca/fwink/

Hope it helps some one else. It is nicely flexible. Needs a tiny polish here and there perhaps, but that's where the open source bit might come in handy for those that can make use of it.
Cheers,
Ian

Ian, the Fwink software was released under the "GNU General Public License" (a free, copyleft license for the software but not open source) and is quite old 2007-08-16 - I have tried it in the past with poor results with my webcam and some reliability problems while running on one of my computer.

Oh, right, well I was simply taking the guidance from the author on the open source bit where he says on the web page:

"Fwink is a free and open source webcam application for Windows."

I must have misunderstood what that meant; I'm surely no expert in all that stuff. Thanks for pointing it out.

I can only wait and see about reliability, it's done fine so far.

It's age suggests it just needs a freshen up to allow it to know about current webcam screen sizes. They have become a great deal more varied than they were when it was last updated. Were you using the Lifecam cinema when you had the issues with it?
Cheers,
Ian

Don't worry Ian, I think the author has misunderstood the concept and licensing has moved on but he has not updated his site.

As already noted, the software is quite old; I have used it in the past and it was reliable but I'm sure there are better tools out there now. I moved on from webcams!

 What price reading THAT licensing agreement then!

This better software you are sure about, you got a name I could try? It's just that I've tried loads and loads of "free to try" software for win 7 SP1 64 bit and this one is the closest to actually working and useful out of all of them so far! If I ever find one that works with my gear and is useful to me then I sure as heck would buy a copy if need be.

Roughly when did you move on from webcams? I ask because I never bothered with them previously as the resolutions used to be more or less pointless, however a year ago the more widespread advent of 720p and 1080p changed all that, and I have found both of the two bigger, glass optic equipped, Microsoft ones (Cinema and Studio models) are pretty darned good for smaller wildlife. Not a DSLR or similar standard of course, but for learning about wildlife imaging they have few or more probably no peer.

Very handy for the sky shot on the weather station if you happen to want one too. Problem is that current software which can exploit the modern cams resolutions correctly just isn't there as far as I can discover. A mate of mine has one of each resolution and he's stumped by the software thing too.

It is pretty frustrating really. :(

However I have tweaked the Fwink software a bit more as the day wore on, and it's getting an awful lot nearer to being spot on for the job! :)

Ian

You could try ConquerCam there is a trial version available.
I have used it with Win7 and Microsoft Lifecam.
Here is the Link

Thanks Log Cabin,

I have found webcam7 in the meantime, and that's nowhere near as bad as it's sibling. Certainly usable up to a point. I'll trial it for a day or so.

I shall try your suggestion too, it could be even closer to what I would like.

UPDATE: 2011-09-13 20:30 hrs

OK, so webcam 7 failed, runs for a while then misbehaves.

Installed ConquerCam. Has issues: most of it's settings don't actually work. Written to author. We shall see!

I guess it's just become too hard for people to write webcam software these days. :P

Log Cabin,

I was wondering what settings you had for resolution?

I can't get it off 640x480.

I told the author this and he is mystified. I did all he asked and updated everything within an inch of it's life. Turned out it was already up to date though.

So, if you used another resolution, then how did you set it.

Ian

Thanks for the pointer, looks way too clever for me, I'm not the brightest bulb in the box, I'm good with simple.

I'm seriously going off having this cam used this way. I think I'll return it to wildlife duty, where I know what I'm doing and already get acceptable results more simply.

Looks good on your site though!

Thanks Ian,
It really isn't complex to get your cam online with Abelcam. Should only take a minute or so. It will do lots more only if you want it too.

Good luck,
Hal

Sorry for the delay in replying
I could only set it to the default 640x480.

I'm using a LifeCam Cinema HD at 1280x800 res and Yawcam to FTP to my web site at 3 times a minute.

See other thread in this forum. Here :- https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.p ... 394#p53394
