Under the Weather

Just received an email invitation to join/submit data to this outfit http://www.undertheweather.co.nz/ , anyone else had the same? I don't have an app phone :o so I have no interest myself but just thought I'd raise the issue. I guess they then want to charge you for the app to see your own data!

The email is personalised "Hi Neil, We've recently been working hard on an exciting new iPhone/Android application for your personal weather station." and uses an email address not from my website. They must have done some searching to get the email address as it's the personal one I use for forums.

Your email address is available from your profile here - or it is to me, anyway, I'm not sure whether 'ordinary' users can see it. But even if it is available, I wouldn't be very happy if someone was spamming users who hadn't actually expressed an interest.

It will be interesting to see how many others get this invitatiion - unfortunately it's just so easy and cheap to use this method of soliciting business.....

As a moderator I am certainly not seeing anyone's address on their profile, so I doubt the email address got taken from here (as standard users will not see it either), unless Steve has just changed a setting to hide them?

No, I haven't changed any settings, and you're right - the email addresses weren't taken from here, my spam wasn't sent to my forum address.

I've also had this email and I'm not amused. It was treated as spam by my ISP.

How has this person got hold of my email address? It's not even entered in my profile settings here and isn't anywhere else on any weather-related site I upload to.

Their email states "we found your weather station on the internet and thought you might be interested." Well yes, you can certainly find my station on the internet but where did you get my email address Ben of "UnderTheWeather"??
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Hi all,

Firstly apologies to anyone who took offense to the email I sent out. As it stated at the bottom of the email I found your address searching though what is publicly available on google. I never intended to 'spam' anyone as I thought weather enthusiasts would be interested in what I have developed. In some cases obviously I 'thought' wrong. I have ceased all emails to anyone that has not requested them.

Again, apologies if it caused offense - never my intention.

Regards, Ben

P.S. Thanks to the more than 100 Culumus users who have submitted their stations and provided some great feedback - I will keep you guys informed of the apps availability - hopefully later this week.

I personally added my own email address, so i am not worried,

But be careful my friend, from your description of how you got email addresses, you have done exactly that, spammed, and your ISP/Email provider might not be best pleased, especially if someone who hasn't posted, has simply reported your email for spamming (i do hope not)

THAT aside, i am looking forward to seeing the finished product, and the very best of luck with it, just don't forget the people around you, when your rich and blameless lol

Ben,

I appreciate your apology but you must have searched quite extensively for my email address because I've not knowingly released it to the wider domain.

If you really wanted to get the attention of enthusiasts then a suitable post in weather forums would have been a far better idea. I'm sure if you googled "weather forums" it would have returned plenty and a single post to each would probably have elicited plenty of interest.

Instead, you have irritated quite a few people and tainted what looks like a good product. You might not think you've spammed but Rob is quite right - you have. I'm sure you've learnt a lesson.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.
