Thanks Cumulus-Moving to Weatherhub2

Post by Ridgekid »

Well, as much as I love your software, I've decided to move on to a Weatherhub2 http://www.ambientweather.com/weambnslu2.html Server. I've left my home PC on long enough and want to continue with my weather broadcasting without the hassles of restarting the PC when we loose power. (Yes I loose the modem too - but it resets itself when I'm not home)

Your site has been a learning expierance. (just can't pick up on this html stuff-too old I guess)

So this is my last week of using your software. You'll be missed! It was worth my contribution!

PS: I'll still be broadcasting to weatherunderground (KPAHomer2), CWOP (DW7676) , PWS (KPAHomer2) and Weatherbug (p11093). I'll drop WOW and pick up weatherforyou.

OH Yeah ... we are looking into webcams too!

If your data goes to PWS, you are already listed on WeatherForYou, because both are allied with HAMweather.

Looks like an interesting device. I looked into building something similar out of one of the new ultra-low-power PCs, but in the end needed the laptop running to help with ham radio stuff.

Let us know how it works out.

Yes-I'm with PWS. I'll have to check the software that comes with the hub to find out how to enable it.

Thanks!

It works! Wasn't too difficult to set up for a novice.

To actually connect back to PWS I had to use my log on (Station ID) unter the HAMweather network. (just like b.e.wilson said) Other than that everything seems to be working well.

Another nice feature is email notifications. I'll be using it for low battery, data logging aborted, sensor failure and connecting to weather network failure. The last one actually let me know I was not broadcasting to APRS.

Now to move on to my next project. Webcams. I'm going to use a PoE camera but this sheevaplug has me thinking. Are they avaialble for webcams?

Most of you are guru's to this stuff. As you may know you can purchase the sheeveplug and meteohub software seperately and save some money. For me, having a PnP device saved me alot of headaches.

DLink and Linksys make wifi webcams of VGA resolution. Asante makes a cheap "HD" webcam with an absolutely pitiful lens (see mine, http://science.uvu.edu/wilson/webcam/webcam_.jpg, look at the blurriness in the lower right corner), and then there are the expensive HD ones, with IR filters that pop in and out automatically to get the best of both day and night.

My personal opinion is to get a nice Canon or Nikon point and shoot camera, and use a program to pull frames. This gives you the option of long shutter speeds at night and excellent color and resolution. The trick is finding (for my situation) a wireless remote USB hub/connector.

Thanks for your comments. I would like to stay away from wifi, which is why I chose PoE. My router (Netgear WND3300) has 10 items hooked up to it already. Most are used as needed. Dish (TV) and Weatherhub2 are hot all the time (Wired). My IPhone is wireless. My HP printer is also wireless, but unless actually printing it does not bear a load on my system.

Other items include: (Current status)

Wired:
Vizio Blueray player (off)
Desktop computer (on-typing this measage)
Laptop Computer (off)
PS3 (off)

Wireless-
Sony Blueray PLayer (off)
Wifes Laptop (off)

I only mention this becuase I'm wondering how much my system can take before something locks up. (IE router). I guess it depends on how I have the sytem hooked up-right?

So here is how it's all hooked up:(Modem staight to router)(All Netgear harware)
WND3300- Dish, PS3 and GS105 switch
GS105 switch- Laptop, GS605 switch (Two ports reservered for PoE cameras)
GS605 switch-Vizio DVD player, Weatherhub2, and desktop computer.
