WH1081 not Recognised as HID Compliant Device

I've started this thread as a follow-on to my first post, https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5729 , with a more accurate thread title that may hopefully help someone else with a similar problem.

Firstly, I would like to thank Steve and the members of this excellent forum for their timely and helpful responses to my original cry for help.

The replies I received indicated the problem was that the WH1081 wasn't being recognised as HID compliant. With that clue, I went searching on Google, and eventually found this thread: - http://forums.techarena.in/portable-devices/1125053.htm , post#2. All credit to Maxforu for the answer. In case the forum goes down, here is the post: -

"The problem is, as stated, a Human Interface Device (HID) in combination with update KB938371. After installing this http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/d...displaylang=en update , my usb-mouse stopped working. Just go to device manager --> HID-devices --> Unknown Device and search for drivers. Vista will not find any drivers online, so you have to search for drivers on your own computer. The location of this driver (in most cases) will be C:/Windows/Winsxs. You will get a popup saying "this is an unsigned driver bla bla bla". Just install the driver. The mouse worked for me (even without reboot)."

Now, I Know this was Vista and a mouse, versus Windows 7 and a weather station, but I thought why not? The message changed to installing driver. After that, the device was installed, and I can collect data on Cumulus. :D :D :D Happy days! Once again, thanks for making me welcome on here. I hope in time I can be of some help to others.

Brian (I suppose - no signature in your message), Windows 7 64-bit will only accept signed drivers and nothing else. You might be able to circumvent that requirement by 'forcing' a driver's installation but this might eventually lead to other problem or corruption or even a deactivation of the driver when a new Microsoft update is installed... :( ...I have gone through a similar situation on a small desktop computer running under Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit - good thing I had a software reinstallation DVD...

Ray - thank you for your concern. As it's working now, after driving me mad for 3 days, I'll take my chance on a future windows update causing me problems. :D

Hey Brian, how did you get this working? I have a 1081, and am trying to connect to XP running in a VMWare machine, and it is not recognising it.
Any tips appreciated...
Thanks John.

Thanks John.

Does the 1081 show as an unknown device in Device Manager? If so, click on properties, drivers, (I think) and ask it to install a driver from a specific location - C:/Windows/Winsxs

It should find a driver, and warn you it's not digitally signed, yada, yada, yada. Tel it to install, and hopefully it should work.

Good luck!!

Yes, it does, but in winsxs I just have a bunch of cryptically named directories... eg:
x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_3bf8fa05
x86_Microsoft.VC90.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.21022.8_x-ww_d08d0375
x86_Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.0.0_x-ww_1382d70a

Which one should I point it at?
Thanks, John.

John, I just pointed it at C:/Windows/Winsxs, and it found it in there. Have you tried that? I realise this isn't quite the same, as my problem was with W7, not XP. Hope it works!

BTW, it took me about 3 days searching the web to get this info! :bash:

Apparently that is a directory basically from Vista/7 so probably doesn't work properly in XP.
Will persist!
Thanks, John.

Ah! Sorry, John. I don't really know what to suggest! Good luck in any case!
