Cumulus Support

Hi. I received my WH1080 from Maplins today, so I am looking forward to getting it set up over the next few days. I was lucky to see the link to this forum from a comment someone had put on the Maplins site.

My name, believe it or not, is Brian Gifford. My wife & I run a small hotel in North Wales. After reading a lot of posts on here, I'm thinking of incorporating the weather readings on the hotel site - should keep me busy for a while!

This seems a really friendly & helpful forum, and I think Steve deserves a medal!

I apologise in advance for the noob questions which I'm sure I'll be posting, but I promise to read the FAQ, and relevant posts first.

Hello, Brian; I know Criccieth a little, having been there a couple of times. The last time we were there (several years ago) we had a very nice meal at the Tir A Mor restaurant, where the proprietors were kind enough to squeeze us in even though we hadn't booked and they were full.

Hi, Rob! Good to see someone in the same area! - yes, just up from the lifeboat station. Our plumber is part of the crew. It makes life interesting, one minute he's putting a new bathroom in, next, you hear footsteps running down the stairs, and with a quick "Brian, Lifeboat!" he's off!

I have been with my local one for just over a year now, love it to bits, good lads on the crew too

Well, I'm here about a week or so behind you on this one, just ordered mine this morning. Maybe we can drive them totally batty with newbie questions!?

Anything you think I really need to know right now would be appreciated. I downloaded all the software I could find, and ordered extra AA cells in my weekly shopping. I hope I got it covered?

Read the wiki carefully, 99% of the answers are in there, and very clear to boot!, if i can understand the most of them, anyone can.

Yes, thanks for the tip; I've been browsing that, it's a treasure trove for sure.

Mostly I am also wondering about tips for starting out with the actual device, from scratch when you are new to it. Things you find out just as you open the box, but had not yet thought about. that sort of thing. I'm not sure if there is any means provided to mount the stub mast. Is there a copy of the manual for it one can download?

I can see me adding Cumulus to it only after an awful lot more reading. There is a lot to read on it.

Hi Ian,

Welcome to the forum. Two "Jubilee" clips are supplied in the kit to attach the stub mast, but mine were too large to attach it to a standard aluminium 1 inch TV mast. I see that Maplin only offer the software .PDF for download, maybe one of the other sellers (e.g. Signatrol) has the User Manual for download, but it doesn't contain much information about properly locating the sensors :

The wind sensors need to be high in "clean" (non-turbulent) air but the rain sensor can't tolerate any rocking so often needs to be lower. And the transmitter unit really needs to be located in the shade because the FO screen isn't good enough to give accurate temperature readings in sunlight. You might find some ideas in this thread. Also take FO's own advice to check that everything is working properly before installing the sensors anywhere inaccessible.

Thanks for the info Alan, I can see some interesting times ahead while getting this all set up "just so" - still, I like a challenge, mostly once I've overcome it!
