Pole for equipment

Post by zecrich »

Hi,
I need a pole to get my equipment up high, there is a tree near our garden that is 25' high and
my wind direction is all over the place as the wind whips round the tree.

I have had a look at some prices and nearly passed out

Any ideas?

I cant put it on the roof

Hi,

Wow! that's a tall order. :D  You may have to satisfy yourself by adding some damping to the wind vane.

That height probably ought to have some guy wires, can your site accept these? Alternatively, at the very least you need a very solid foundation such as a 6 foot high wall or a well rooted concrete fence post, etc.. Do you have space to "hinge down" a complete mast (and some way to pull it up) or do you need something telescopic?

Many years ago I had something similar (attached to the side of the house) for a large aerial and I'm now planning to reinstate it for my FO wind sensors. Only put the wind sensors at the top (with an extension cable) the other sensors are generally better (and more accessible) near ground level.

I used (and suggest you might need) a 2 inch diameter, 15 foot long, lightweight steel tube carrying a 10 foot, 1.25" -1.5" diameter aluminium tube (or perhaps a larger diameter wood shaft) with the FO sensors on the top. You must consider lightning protection, but also corrosion at junctions of dissimilar metals, etc.. Delivery of a 15 foot mast/pole is not going to be easy.

Cheers, Alan.

I once put CB aerial up for my son on one of those 20ft scaffolding poles that I bought from a local scaffolder, but it needed a good concrete base and guy ropes that I attached to drilled angle iron hammered well into the ground. Worked well for at least 10 years.
