Fine Offset Rain Gauge Mod

Post by wd40 »

This is not a Cumulus problem. I t works just fine.
Like most of the Fine Offset owners, my rain gauge was about 10% low as compared to the manual gauge. I used aluminum sheet to extend the sides straight up so the area is the same if not a tiny bit smaller since the extension fits inside the original well. I did this to eliminated the splash out. Now I am reading way over the rain gauge. The manual rain gauge is a Walmart unit so it can be wrong but I don't think by over 20%.

I have checked this three times now and the Offset is always higher by about the same amount.

Today as an example Cumulus reported the total of 1.82" and the manual gauge showed hair less than 1.4"

The gauge is level and I have no correction calibration in Cumulus.

I know others have went to a funnel and had no increase issue. This has me stumped.

My Fine Offset rain gauge has read about 20% low since I bought it.

I'm sure you've checked to make sure there are no cobwebs or dirt interfering with the tippers operation?

Has anybody else extended the sides straight up as I have?

I did something similar using a two liter soda bottle and a 1 liter one for the funnel.
After doing some calibration against my manual gage, seems quite reliable.
