the gauges use fillText()

I may be finding gremlins that don't exist but it is my impression that ctx.fillText writes the text and ctx.strokeStyle assigns a quality (color) to the outline of the characters written by fillText and ctx.fillStyle assigns a quality to fill in the outlined character written by fillText - or its just something else I don't understand yet - is that at all clear? Just starting to actually try to understand Canvas.

If the character written by ctx.fillText is scaled up without a ctx.fillStyle the character will be just an outline. Am I close? Are there some defaults I have missed?

In any case I am having a great time with your Steelseries and muddling my way with Canvas.

.fillText() draws solid filled characters in the .fillStyle.
.strokeText() draws characters as hollow outlines with the .strokeStyle, and line thickness of .lineWidth

The strokeText() method draws small text noticeably 'bolder' because it has to use a minimum line thickness of 1, and for small text it will 'appear' to be filled, the outline only becomes apparent at larger sizes.

You can use both methods, draw some filled text, then draw outline text over the top. The colours of each draw can be different.

Just got a W-1080 for Christmas today. Got it up and running and broadcasting but I've read nearly every page in the thread and can not find any instructions to install these gauges. Can you please point me in the right direction.

BTW, great work.

You might want to first download the SteelSeries Gauges package version 1.2.2 (look at the first message in this thread), extract that package to a know directory of your choice and have a look at the 'ReadMe.txt' file contained within that package - the 'ReadMe.txt' file can easily be opened/view using Windows basic 'Notepad' utility. ;)

Once you have followed the instructions provided by Mark, then you should have working (displaying) SteelSeries Gauges - if you are encountering some problems, then describe the problem(s) and one of us will try to find a solution with you... :geek:

For the next release I wanted to change the realtimegauges.txt to realtimegauges.json. BUT, I just the found the IIS7 instance on my laptop I use for testing needed a MIME type adding for .json before it would serve the files.

So question: Is that change going to cause too many problems? Should I stick to calling the file realtimegauges.txt, but make the contents JSON formatted?

Indeed Mark, I would suggest that you stay with the 'txt' (or even with the 'tpl' for template) format - I could not find any mention of '.json' in the registry of my Windows 7 (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT)...

Just curious - why does the text data file has to be converted into a '.json' format?

It does not 'have' to be converted, but by doing so I can drop a whole is file (parserealtime.is) from the solution, and switch to a browser native JSON.parse().

It also makes the realtime file self documenting, and independent of the order of things within the file.

Do what ever you feel is in your own best interest! I, for one, will just take that as something new to learn. Since this entire trip has been such an enjoyable learning curve mainly as this board's members are so helpful and understanding, new ideas are always pleasant and rewarding exercises.

March on...............

Your realtimegauges.txt file contains the raw webtags, have you ticked the 'process' checkbox for that file in Cumulus?
