For the possibly the first time ever I shutdown my PC in hibernation mode. When I restarted Cumulus had closed and when I attempted to restart crashed several times. (Bugreport.txt attached).
A clean reboot resolved the issue.

Re: Program Crash Report - restart from hibernation
Cumulus can't cope with the PC being put into any kind of 'sleep' mode while it's running, you need to make sure you have that disabled, and if you manually hibernate, make sure Cumulus isn't running. It doesn't normally crash after a hibernation; but in this case, it was the serial port system code which crashed.
Edit: There's an option in the station settings to make Cumulus attempt to close itself if the PC does go to sleep while it's running. But I don't know whether it would prevent the serial port problem, it may be that would happen even if Cumulus wasn't running. I can never hibernate my PC because it stops my wireless network adapter working.
