how to show data on our live page?

Hello,

Newby question here...
We've a basic website which we used to update live data from our Vantage Vue station here:-
http://www.ourweather.co.uk

We used to use Weather Display, and uploaded the data with Weather Display Live into out Live Data link, http://www.ourweather.co.uk/livedata.html

However, due to Weather Display regularly causing the two different PC / Laptops we tried running it on, we decided to try Cumulus.

In simple, laymans terms (!), what do I need to do to show data uploaded by Cumulus on our live data page?

All help gratefully received!

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

Instructions for configuring Cumulus to upload to a web site are in the help, and in the wiki: http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Website_setup

If you want something similar in concept to WDL, have a look at "Cumulus Realtime" on the downloads page. That needs Cumulus to upload a file called realtime.txt; see the help for the internet settings - it's just a case of ticking a few boxes once you've done the standard setup.

Hello Steve, and thanks for your reply.

I've tried following the instructions in the wiki, that's where I've hit a wall.
I've successfully configured the Weather Underground bit - a doddle. But with regards to the uploading of data to our website, hmmm!

As we'd like to retain the appearance of our Live Data page ( www.ourweather.co.uk/livedata.html ), although actually displaying content (!), what do I have to do within Cumulus, and what files / and filenames should any alterations take place on?
Should I consider making the Live Data page a framed page, with Cumulus uploading to a lower frame?

Thanks in advance.

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

I'm still not sure what you actually want to display, when you say 'live' data. I understand that you want to retain your site's 'look and feel', but do you want static pages, like this: http://sanday.org.uk/weather/, or a 'real time' display, like this: http://sanday.org.uk/weather/realtime.htm - or both?

A number of people have incorporated the 'guts' of the standard Cumulus into their own pages by extracting the required bits and tweaking the CSS, or alternatively you can write your own pages from scratch using web tags. It really depends on what you want, and your ability.

Hello again Steve,

Sorry for being a pain :(. What I wanted to do was to use a 'real time' display.
I've successfully (?) incorporated the code into out Live Data page (www.ourweather.co.uk/livedata.html) but I cannot seem to find the realtime.txt file anywhere within Cumulus, nor uploaded by Cumulus.
In the Configuration>Internet Settings>Sites/Options/Web Settings section, I've ticked Auto Update, Enable Realtime, Enable Realtime FTP, and Enable Realtime.txt FTP.

Maybe I've missed something?

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

Looks like you've set it all up correctly - in Cumulus. But in your CumulusRealtime.xml file on your web site, you've got the URL of your realtime.txt file wrong; you've got:

http://www.ourweather.co.uk/livedata.html/realtime.txt

and it's actually at

http://www.ourweather.co.uk/realtime.txt

Hello again Steve,

After removing the "livedata.html/" from the url in the xml file, nothing from Cumulus shows at all online, whereas before the change, I at least saw the main panel (albeit not showing the data)...

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

It's working fine for me - a caching problem with your browser?

Ok, I normally use Opera as my main browser, this is what I was using initially earlier when I could see the data panel, but without the data uploading.
Now that I've changed the .xml file, I can see the page correctly (however, see below) in Google Chrome, but still not in Opera.

I seem to be getting an awful lot of FTP connect errors, codes 426 or 10060 (together with a single 11004!).
I seem to have set up the Internet Settings correctly in Cumulus, but cannot fathom out a way of stopping the errors.
The visible data (in Chrome) is stuck at 11.27.56, whereas it's now 11.39am...

Thanks again for your help thus far.

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

Your HTML is broken, that's probably why Opera won't display it. Am HTML page should have this structure:

<html>
<head>
header elements
</head>
<body>
body elements
</body>
</html>

Yours has this structure:

<html>
<head>
header elements
some body elements
</body>
</head>
<body>
body elements
</body>
</html>

I seem to be getting an awful lot of FTP connect errors, codes 426 or 10060 (together with a single 11004!).
Those look like timeout errors, so a problem somewhere between Cumulus and your ftp server. You could try active ftp mode, if you haven't already, or perhaps check firewall settings. But if it works some of the time, I wouldn't expect that to help.

I notice that you have copies of all of the standard 'static' pages, and associated images on your site, e.g. http://www.ourweather.co.uk/trends.htm. If you don't intend to use those, you should probably turn them off (on the files tab of the internet settings).

Your website also seems to be very slow for me. The realtime panel is loading at less than 1% per second. Maybe that also has something to do with the FTP problems? Once eventually loaded it displayed OK.

Morning everyone,

At last, the Cumulus Realtime data now shows up on the website,and updates as it should.
I have another question (uhoh!) :-

Has there been any thoughts on providing a Flash alternative to Silverlight for Realtime?

Thanks for producing a nice, clean, workable app in the form of Cumulus!.

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.

The 'official' Flash version of Realtime, such as it is, is on the supplied gauges page. I didn't get very far with it, and I won't be doing any more with it. That doesn't stop someone else doing something with Flash, of course.

Hello Steve,

The reason I asked is that my Android phone isn't supported by Microsoft for Silverlight, yet.
Can you please put the link up for the supplied gauges page?

Very Best Wishes,
Bob.
