DOA Unit

How common is it to have these WS-1081 units show up DOA? Mine is...likely why it was cheap on eBay.

I was kinda excited to get it going this weekend. I gues it means I have to work on my bathroom! 
I'd rather do a swap of the transmitter - it will cost me a few $ to send the whole thing back. Base unit seemd to work fine.

Hi Scott,
Some people have commented that the FO Quality Control is not as good as it could/should be.
I presume that the small red LED is not flashing and/or the transmitter draws no current immediately after applying power. I cannot think of any other way to know that it's the transmitter which is "DOA". The small duty cycle of operation makes normal measurements quite difficult. Sadly the box is glued together so not much can be checked.

Right. Little red dot in the grating never lights up, blinks. Dead. Base unit works like a charm - like it.

batteries are definitely making good contacts at both ends? Some AAs seem to have shorter "pips" on the positives than others- worth checking they're not hung-up on plastic.

Is it necessary to have all the componets attached to bring up the transmitter to life? Does the solar panel need to be in real sunlight?
BTW, vendor will ship out new transmitter unit. So...I'll fool with this next weekend!

I don't have the solar version myself, but it would be a very poor design if it needed the sun to shine on the panel (all the time).
It definitely does not need the sensors (as such) to be connected, but someone said that the solar unit shares (daisy chains with) one of the sensor cables. Someone also mentioned (probably in this long thread) that the solar unit Circuit Board carried tracks for a battery holder but it is not installed. So it does sound as if you have a DOA transmitter.
